I wonder what she was like. She seems so strong in her poems, but her life was not so strong.

Oh I did not even consider that the artist herself may have been intended there - I was looking at the "So I stared" in the first sentence of the last stanza, just after the "witch's face" in the prior sentence, so was considering what a witch looking into such a portal would see.

But of course like a dream, perhaps every subject in a poem is some manner of reflection upon the writer, so "she" herself sees beauty there? (Though hopefully more real, as opposed to e.g. the witch looking)
