THE DOUBLE TRAGEDY OF SAN DIEGO: When Heroism Is Individual but Guilt Is Collective
Part 01 of 02 - Collective Guilt, the Asymmetry of Suspicion, and the Architecture of the “We Versus They” Ledger
The Double Tragedy of San Diego is a longform essay about the two tragedies that follow public violence: the immediate human loss, and the slower, deeper machinery of interpretation that turns individual acts into collective meaning. Beginning with the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego, the essay explores how grief, suspicion, and belonging are distributed unevenly in public life. It examines the asymmetry by which some perpetrators are individualized while others become representative, and asks what it means to live in a society where belonging can become conditional.
The essay also insists on holding several truths together at once: radicalization is a human problem, not a problem unique to any one community; mass violence cannot be understood honestly without confronting larger political and historical contexts; and the displacements and destruction of the post-9/11 era cannot simply be ignored. At its core, the piece asks what democracy owes its minorities — not only in law, but in moral imagination.
