Sock swatch

I bought a pack of Hanes socks. Not a single pair lasted more than 8 days.

I've made socks. Big ones. Kilt worthy ones. Weeks of work. But what if I made ankle socks. Ones where you get two socks from a skein instead of three or for skeins per pair?

I have a stash of sock yarn. Some of it is this brown and blue that was popular in 2008 and is, in my opinion, one of the worst color combinations that has ever existed in human history. But it's free.

I have my swatch done. Now to figure out a pattern. Eventually I'll need a darning egg.

As soon as my current wood glue up is done I will be in the wood shop making a darning egg.

I had that issue with socks. Bought a few pairs from darn tough socks out of frustration. Still going strong after 2 years. They are strengthened at the heel and toes and that looks just like your picture. :)

I always wing it.

But that failed here. I had made good progress but ending up frogging because it was 12 stitches too wide. I started over last night.

I admire the winging it - I still stick to a pattern even though I usually cobble several patterns together to get the frankensock that I want. I recently frogged a pair that was a little too wide and I’m much happier with them now - hopefully yours are working up as a better fit too!

Excuse my uninformed question, but why would you need a darning egg if you are knitting socks from scratch?
