Manga Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [2026, Week 21]
Another week in the books. Let's chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.
Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).
It's time for my semi-regular manhwa posting. Once again, I have two series with somewhat similar premise but pretty different execution to compare - these series being: Philomel the Fake and Who Made me a Princess.
Philomel the Fake is a story of a fake princess who was switched with the real one as a baby and raised in her place. At age 9, she finds the "book of prophecy" which describes a story of Philomel who after the return of the real princess becomes a villainess and ends up executed in a horrible manner. The plot itself revolves around Philomel growing up with one objective in mind: survive.
She spends her life walking on eggshells, distrustful of anyone and working on a way to escape the palace unharmed (preferably forgotten altogether). It's a somewhat sad but not unhappy story, full of (realistically) broken people trying to avoid their predestined fate (whether it's something predicted by the book or expectations set out for them by their family). There are twists and turns along the way but the core plot and the psychological effects of growing in such environment are an important part of the whole thing.
I mostly like the twists involved but there are some parts I'm a bit less interested in. I'll details in the spoiler for safety.
::: spoiler Late story spoilers There are two things I like in regards to the twists involved, this being:
For the former, normally it's the protagonist who comes from a different world. Sometimes it's both them and the antagonist but having the MC be "nothing but a side mob" is not something I've seen done much in stories like this. It's a welcome change, simple as that.
As for the latter, the world of this story comes from a video game. Game, where where Philomel wasn't a pure evil person and where one of the routes gave her a happy ending. Book on the other hand is a fan fic, created by someone who disliked Phil and wanted a more black and white version of events for their own satisfaction. This fan fic was later made official by the devs and implemented in the game as an event item and that's why it exists in the form our MC got it in. Even then, it's still just that - a fan fic (which leads to a fun scene where Phil gets seriously pissed off upon learning about it).
In regards to the stuff I'm less happy with, there's:.
Probably the least surprising twist we could get but yeah, the real princess is "evil". She knows this is the world of a game and that's exactly how she treats it. All the characters are NPCs, nothing is real, she just wants to follow the plot of her fan fic to reach the state where she will be happy (or at least that what she thinks will happen when she reaches it). It's kind of whatever honestly but the plot is still ongoing so we'll see if anything interesting happens with this.
Second unsurprising fact: Phil helps multiple important characters who reward her with special blessings, she's a daughter of the most powerful magician in the world etc. There's a lot of the usual tropes that make me roll my eyes. Most of it start to happen later in the story so I was already hooked by then but it doesn't make it any less boring. :::
It's a pretty engaging story and I can't wait to read the rest. It will take a while however as I caught up to the latest chapters and now have no other choice than to be patient.
Who Made me a Princess is similar but different. MC gets yoinked into a novel as princess Athanasia, the real daughter of the emperor (unlike Phil). She also has to figure out a way to survive because even though her destiny isn't to be a villainess, her father hates her guts and wants to kill her regardless of how good, useful or "worthy" as a successor she is.
Unlike the previous title, this one is almost pure comedy (though there are some more serious parts). We have a baby, later child, possessed by an adult woman with full knowledge of the story who tries to plan her escape before she can even walk. She has a lot of great reaction panels and the constant contrast of her inner thoughts filled with snarky, modern commentary and her baby form is hilarious every time it happens (which is a lot). It's especially great because it's not just her acting like a grown up when she's alone. She has a great mix of her "normal" personality and pure child-like behaviour which keeps things from getting stale.
I'm a bit over halfway through the story so it's too early to make any final statements on its quality but it's been a great read. Lots of laugh to be had and there are some interesting things being teased the further I go. I hope it sticks the landing.
