Helsinki will ban cars from railway station area

Helsinki has decided to abolish car traffic on Kaivokatu, the street in front of the city's central train station. That is part of plans to transform the heart of the capital into a pedestrian district. The central traffic route between the east and west sides of the city will be closed and replaced with trees, outdoor cafés and two new tram tracks.

The changes will be implemented gradually between now and the early 2030s.

I was already impressed with the new bridge being car free, but I did not expect such policies to be implemented in the heart of Helsinki. Coming out or going to the main station was always one of the least nice parts of visiting.
