Review of GroundandSea.com – by SoulanoSkater on lemmy.world
I like supporting small shops and finding deals. This is just another one of those adventures. This time with groundandsea.com
Like many tiny shops online, once in a while I find a shop with some great deals who is just trying to move some older stock. I believe this shop fits that bill. The deals are pretty good. Modus Black Bearings for $7, Element decks for $22 (not just tiny ones, they go up to 8.3) -Even the trucks are priced very well, some extremely well. This is just to name a few items. Most orders shipped for around $12 within the same state, my guess for cross country might be closer to $20. Lot’s of great things to load up on at this store so I placed an order.
I bought everything on Day 1, a Thursday. I was told upon checkout that my card would be charged manually.. not ideal but okay.
There was this warning: Please note, most orders take 4-5 business days to process before they ship out.
I found this to be true if “ship out” means print the label.
Around day 3 they finally updated the package status to “Awaiting Shipment” -well before the 4-5 day mark.
I did send a few emails throughout the process because it was a lengthy wait and I was inquisitive.
The shipping label was eventually checked-in, but took the larger part of a week to finally ship.
All-in-all, the order was placed on a Thursday, and I just received it, exactly 2 weeks later, on a Thursday.
Upon opening the order, I noticed they had included an extra set of Modus Blue Bearings. Immediately I thought it was a mistake. If it had happened at CCS or Daddies, I would have taken it as a win. But I wasn’t trying to do that to a small shop, I was about to email them back offering to pay for them (I could totally use an extra set for $11, no issues there) when I realized: they probably included them as a gift because I had emailed them 2 or 3 times and it took 2 weeks to get here within the same state. Ok cool. That’s a win for sure. They’re solid middle of the road bearings I can throw in anything. Thanks guys and gals.
It seems they’re not an actual shop, but they do allow pickup at their warehouse. I imagine it might be a small operation run by one person as a side hustle. 2 weeks might be a little lengthy, but it’s exactly the kind of operation I want to support.
Other than the time issue, I got exactly what I ordered. I finally got a nicer skate tool (the grind king was like $10.80 I think) some $2 spitfire wax. Risers, bearings, a $22 element deck. They even have those Quantum Isotope Ceramic Bearings I’ve been eyeing for cheaper than I have ever seen ($43) -they use a much harder type of ceramic that can take much harder impacts, making them ideal for situations you wouldn’t normally use ceramic bearings.
The element deck I was crossing my fingers for a BBS board, but it was Chinese (no shade though, some Chinese woodshops make great boards, and they’re usually the ones using more innovative techniques and resins and such.) That said I still wish I got a BBS.
Anyways, I totally suggest them. My next review I hope to review ThuroShop.com -which has some great deals including $25 mini logo decks.
Definitely give them a shot if you can wait a few weeks. Go for it. No regrets, and it feels much better than buying on amazon.
