I also have a very old DELL laptop with 2gb, and it works very well with Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint, especially Mint, it never felt slow.
steam and firefox are obviously hungry, someone with 2 or 1gb wouldn't play games on steam anyway, drm-free would be a wise choice, for the browser? I think brave is much faster.

Some distributions run fine with less than 1gb. I think xubuntu will happily play with 1.
Fortunately RAM is cheap right now.

Granted, 2 isn't enough and it hangs sometimes, but it works quite well almost all the time.
