Images of the new passport were shared with The Bulwark on condition that it not publish them. According to the source, a government official who provided The Bulwark with color photographs of the redesign, the State Department is planning a “limited run” of 25,000 Trump-emblazoned passports. As of now, according to the source, the new design is still awaiting approval.

My bet is this is either a soft launch before they just use this one for all passports (discouraging left of center people from getting it) or a way to encourage old MAGA people who have never considered traveling to get proof of citizenship. Either way, it's about voting and citizenship checks, not just ego.

Shit, looks like I will be renewing my passport a few months early. Can I put on the application that I am renewing it early because I don't want to carry around Trump's picture for the next 10 years?
Unless you’re in DC and applying in person at a certain passport office, you have nothing to worry about. Headlines for this story make it seem like this is a nationwide thing for everyone because that idea drives engagement a lot more than the actual situation.
