I wonder if he liked the sound - woodpeckers hammer on different things as a mating/territorial call.
I have one that likes to hammer on my tin chimney cap - holy hell does that ring out for some distance. He's clearly saying "wherever this can be heard is my land".
Just wish he'd do it at 6:30 so the over sleepers in my family would get up, haha
