Giamatti upheld a long tradition of villainous scenery chewing on Star Trek in a way I normally would have enjoyed, but it really clanged with the rest of the tone of the show.

I'd have to agree. It's kind of a pity we might not see Giamatti get to do Star Trek again. (And off-topic, but I feel the same way about Amanda Plummer.)

God you're so right. Brooks knew how to chew a scene like no other. Only de Lancie came close.

All I've seen of Academy is one scene of Giamatti on YouTube. I've heard that that scene isn't representative of the whole show, unfortunately.

It actually felt like a star trek show, more so than anything since DS9. Coulda done with less full face close ups though.
