Panel 1: A father and son stand at a bus stop, the father holding a briefcase. The son asks, "Daddy, why do you have to go to work every day?" Panel 2: The father responds, "So we can have nice things, my boy." The son looks up at him. Panel 3: The son says, "But all of our things are shit." Panel 4: The father says, "You're shit." and gazes into the distance, lost in thought.

Yeah, comic sounds dated, like from 90s when people had nice things.
I thought I remembered this or a very similar comic where the punchline is: your things are shit.
The version of this that I've heard is "So we can buy nice toys" -- "But all my toys are shit" -- "LOL mine aren't"
