How to keep small communities alive without spamming ?

What, in your opinion, is the best combination of posting the same picture in several communities ?
The two (problematic) extremes being one picture spammed to death invading everyone's feed, and the other being smaller niche communities not being used because everyone favours the more generalist and populated ones. So again, what's your take on the issue ?
As a generalized problem, I would like to see more cross posting. Put the main post in the appropriate nice community and cross post to a larger one. That gets the content in front of the larger audience and also implicitly promotes the niche. It probably also saves hosting costs at scale, especially for video. Ideally, client software would be smart enough to show users only the nested post once in their feed even if subscribed to both communities involved, but there’s value in the approach regardless.
OP you seem to do a good job of posting individual images only to two communities at once, which I think is a pretty reasonable approach. It doesn’t devolve into annoying spam for users to see one extra copy in the feed, and it’s nice to see you spread the
legslove around to keep more communities active.More than two copies would start to feel like spam. That would be a shame, especially as a non-monetizing couple just sharing sex pics for fun (thank you!) and since internet points don’t matter. I could see why an OnlyFans teaser account might stick to larger generalist communities, but they also wouldn’t be genuinely interested in Lemmy’s organic growth.
Getting the niches right is pretty important. For example, I’m not particularly interested in cum on faces, so I’m not subscribed to c/cumsluts, but I sure like cum dripping out of pussies so I follow c/creampies. It’s a little disappointing any time I look at the local feed and happen to see great creampie posts that only got put in cumsluts, but even that FOMO is not going to get me to subscribe to the wrong (for me) niche. More cross posting would be great.
Just independent of any NSFW stuff it's always better to have more generalised communities and only branch out into niches if the general community gets too big or one topic annoys enough people.
That's also how it worked in the German usenet. They even close groups that aren't active enough anymore.
See this is why we asked, because our own opinion very much differs :) We feel that an online space only feels alive if multiple subspaces coexist together, and that in the case of Fedinsfw, the generalist communities can just be redundant with a subscription feed made up of all the relevant niches one wants
I agree, if I only wanted a generalist flood of porn then I would just scroll through the ‘hub or whatever. The great value of something like Lemmy is that everyone can customize their feeds to be full of niches that match their particular interests. That custom aggregation is awesome, so promoting more posts in niche communities is a very worthy goal!
The same argument applies to SFW content as well.

Fediverse is the whole universe of different systems communicating with each other in one big network, not just nsfw. It is made of instances (=servers =sites) each hosting a selection of communities (=forums) with topics. For exemple here you are on the fedinsfw.app instance, and inside the asknsfw community.
You can subscribe to any community on this instance or any other instance communicating with it, from the list of communities, a quick search, and many other ways.
While not as populated as reddit for example, it is far from a quiet place, most posts will get some form of interaction

Yes, and from people who were around during the initial launch of lemmynsfw, the activity here is actually quite high given the age of the instance
