What does “Taqiyya” mean in Islam?

Taqiyya is presented as a method that permits the concealment of the truth, the adoption of a deceptive stance, or the telling of lies under certain conditions—particularly in relation to non-believers—with the aim of protecting or advancing the interests of Islam. Within this framework, taqiyya is defined as a strategic form of concealment that may be employed to gain an advantage over the enemy, to gain trust, and to expose the weaknesses of the opposing side.[1] This concept is based on several verses of the Qur’an and hadiths.[2], [3], [4], [5], [6]
