Kickstarter has become a pretty common way for companies to gauge interest in a new product or project. I don't think having a Kickstarter means a company gets more money than they otherwise would have, since backers still get the product, it just means if there isn't much interest, the company hasn't invested a ton of money to make an initial batch and do initial marketing for something no one is going to buy.
