The poltergeist movies used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid. I never saw the thing or Angel heart. And I’ve probably watched the aliens movie 1000 times on VHS alone.
I don't want to over-hype The Thing and ruin it for you but it's a good one. The remote isolation of an Antarctic research center is well portrayed. The 2011 version is actually a prequel that's also pretty good and faithful to the story, so also worth a watch.

Hard to do better than The Thing, and special effects still hold up pretty well. Aliens also fits this category.
Poltergeist is a classic but some of the special effects show their age.
Angel Heart is a great older one that many people haven't seen.
