1025, if you don't count regional variants that have the same name, and many have multiple forms now.

I remember being upset that I just learned 2nd gen when they added a third. My hair is turning grey.

Exactly. How else are you meant to "catch 'em all!"? It's a Sisyphean task otherwise

It's probably worse than that. Every time it rolls back down, it becomes a bigger boulder, because new pokemon are there

You can’t even ‘catch ‘em all’ anymore anyway. There are too many so they have to keep pulling more and more from the games.

Up to the 3ds games there was always a way to trade pokemon at least 1 generation up (red to silver, silver to ruby, etc) if they continued that trend it should still technically be possible. But eventually you'll get to a point where it will take long to trade pokemon up than it takea for a new game to come out.

What do you mean "nowadays"? Weren't the ancient Egyptians all pokemon fans? What else did they play on their phones?
