That headline definitely sounds awful, but considering the specific liability issue in a civil case is a really hard thing for a jury to do. This is why appeals exist.
A good example of how "the only good cop is a dead cop" is often descriptive rather than prescriptive; they tried to be a good cop, and would you look at that, now they're dead
