[Discussion] What should happen with content from banned users?

Mbin has multiple options to deal with problematic users:

Ban the user -> federated to other instances, user cannot login anymore
Suspend the user -> not federated, user can still login, but not create any content
Delete the user -> federated, the user and their content is deleted

What should happen with the content of a banned user? Lemmy still shows it, but puts a "Banned" badge next to the username.

Its important to mention we also do have a "Delete" option, which allows admins to fully remove the user and its content.
The banned user should always be able to still delete their content if they wish to. This is required by Art. 17 GDPR . https://gdpr-info.eu/art-17-gdpr/ (which includes if the user is banned, and still showing the content)

In my opinion, it's morally wrong to still show the content if the user has no way to delete it anymore themselves (by being unable to log in).

Especially if there's no license agreement / terms of service explicitly giving the instance the right to do so.

I completely understand that, but a user can be unbanned, it is not guaranteed though. Maybe we have to automatically delete a banned user after x time 🤔

Still should the content be hidden or should it just be labeled?

I'd say when a user is banned, if they then have no access to their account at all to manually remove anything, their content should be hidden.
