Found out old mate from my old work who used to treat me like shit was pushed out the door yesterday.

Huzzah!!!

24
aussie.zone

Nah that's the owner. This is the dickhead from the department I was in that thought he was King Dick

2

It's a lot of work but it's amazing.

Cutting my teeth on HR/WHS in a high risk environment is so much more rewarding than what I was doing.

Already making a big difference in the workplace based on the feedback I'm getting

1

It's cold, it's dark and I'm on my way home having been given the nicest compliment anyone has ever given me

You have a presence that lifts everyone around you

My heart

21

As it's Pride month (love all my gay/queer/trans homies and homettes) I'd like to share that we have had three separate friends of our kids, come out to us before telling their parents.

My wife responds with a motherly hug and I put the kettle on.

I've told all the kids that if they need adult backup when (if) they tell their parents, I'll happily accompany them and offer sanctuary, just in case.

I may not be their parent, but I'll pretend to be one if it makes them feel safe.

I don't share this a lot in real-life to keep our space safe for the kids, but felt like saying it here tonight.

21

Forgot to say hello to everyonehere, I finally made it here today.

I was wondering where everyone from the DT went when it came back and I stumbled across a stray comment after Epicpillow said someone was impersonating them here.

Good to see all the familiar names I used to see!

20

I have a little story to tell. I'd never been interstate so for our first trip together we booked a flight to Tassie and booked a nice cabin out the back of the pub with a "continental breakfast" included. How good is that we thought. I wonder what a continental breakfast involves. Bacon, eggs maybe some sausages and mushrooms thrown in if we are lucky. Now we couldn't google this because internet wasn't really a thing back then. It was so long ago that we flew there on Ansett.

Anyway we arrived at the pub to book in and thought we'll stay for a meal. Half way through, old mate calls us over and says "Here, I may as well give this to you now so I don't wake you up in the morning" and he hands us a freezer bag with 4 slices of white bread and a small carton of long life milk. Still nothing jerried.

We get to the cabin and we do what any respectable couple does. He checks the TV for channels. I raid the fridge. And there I discovered the open jar of jam, Vegemite and margarine. "Um Dear, I don't think the continental breakfast is what we think it is" "What do you mean?"" Well there's condiments in the fridge. I think it just means toast".

Everytime we here those words "continental breakfast" we laugh.

Had an influencer encounter at the gym this morning. Their session lasted about 10 minutes before a staff member escorted them out.

Local council gyms don't play that shit it seems.

16
aussie.zone

A fitness influencer (or wannabe one) was recording an exercise set at the gym. The gym has very strict policies about recording equipment (forbidden without a permit). Several people complained, including a trainer who was running a class behind this person. Staff member came over, grabbed the phone, turned it off and essentially said "Let's go" and started walking away.

Person didn't even have a membership and were on day 3 of a free trial too.

15
omoikirireply

Oooh. You just know that they’ve tried that at other gyms too.

“Safety isn’t important” says man who would later go on to implode under the ocean taking 4 other people with him.

Probably the single greatest win for climate change in a while.

I feel bad for the young dude who went with his dad and the Titanic expert (professor) who has done the dive previously.

The sub operator was an absolute tit with his attitude to deep sea diving.

8
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Have you seen the controller? Just… dude I wouldn’t have used that thing to go to the bottom of a backyard pond!

7
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Xbox controllers are light years beyond the Logitech stuff though. And it’s only drones who cares.

But oh yeah 100% it’ll be the windows. What purpose did they even serve?? What would you actually see at that depth?

6
aussie.zone

The pressure cycling on the hull would also weaken the sub. When carbon fibre it also fails spectacularly.

3
aussie.zone

All it needed was Cheetos stains on the analogue sticks, and that gross shit that builds up around the seams and near the buttons.

5

someone on reddit said the Tit will go look at Titan next

4

After pushing through to finish out the work day (bossy boss & my last day before a week off), I found and booked in with the Richmond Priority Primary Care Centre, to have my increasingly painful ear looked at. Now have confirmation of an infected ear.

That clinic takes in urgent cases that can be handled without going to emergency, and was such a great alternative given all the standard GPs seemed to have closed for the weekend. They were super easy to book in with via HotDoc. Highly recommend.

::: spoiler spoiler Also, my (newish) BF is being really sweet and is offering to postpone our plans for tomorrow so he can just make me dinner and take care of me 🥹

I don't know how some find it hard to sign up here. I just googled aussie zone, followed the prompts to login (I think Chrome keeps my deets) and I'm in and I'm technically challenged. Like I only learnt how to screen shot last night.

Also I think we do need to come up with a new name like Tinybreak suggested. Something like The Melbourne Literary and Microwave Potato Society.

14
aussie.zone

Oh no shade. I was just curious as to what was going wrong for many because I know it's a little glitchy but it was workable for me. I'm thinking there is probably other ways to get in to here that I am oblivious to. I hope you're all good now.

2
aussie.zone

It's quite glitchy for me on my phone - the app just doesn't work for some reason. But the browser page is working just fine, so as long as that still works, we are all good.

3

Yeah I'm using the browser on my phone. I don't need to sign in everytime. I didn't need to change my user name. The hardest thing was coming up with a password that it liked because it kept saying weak.

2

See I don't know what that means having never facebooked. My husband has always said to me If in doubt back out. The back button is your friend.

6

I may have been known to do that. But excessive alcohol consumption was involved.

2
aussie.zone

you know what is tricky though, successfully searching for other fediverse communities. like on beehaw & kbin. seems to work somethimes, then not work others. i followed guides to it so i've got the syntax down. it just doesn't work sometimes.

3
aussie.zone

See this is all in another language that I don't understand. I hope everything works smoothly for you in the future.

1
aussie.zone

....and now apparently the Jerboa has been updated, but Lemmy hasn't yet so the app is incompatable from the aussie.zone instance... instance needs to be on 0.18.0....i have no idea what any of this means yet...

2
aussie.zone

Haha. All I've understood so far is that Jerboa is an an app for Android and you can access other stuff on it and it's a bit shit.

2
aussie.zone

undefined> Also I think we do need to come up with a new name like Tinybreak suggested.

I missed this - what's the idea behind changing the name? Is it just to separate us from the Reddit DT?

3
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

I had problems this morning signing up. It looked like it was forever loading and not going to the next screen or registering or logging me on.

2

Oh. I hate when things don't work straight away because I immediately think is it me? What's happening? Back out, back out, back out.

1

On the menu for tonight is takeaway pizza, a bottle of red and a TV show which requires no thinking. I'm mentally spent, today was a really tough day. Recharge required.

TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

Bogan pop tart? Either way, keen as shit! Was it just a bit of butter on the outside?

5
aussie.zone

I'm not a fan of Nutella so I made some of these with cheese and Vegemite not long ago. You enjoy those babies on this cold morning. Well done.

4
aussie.zone

Sounds good! I'd like to try a "pizza" type of filling next time, but I'm worried it won't cook. If I had a jaffle/toasty maker type thing I'd put it in there, but I've only got my gas stove griller.

3
aussie.zone

Yeah, I guess I could start it in there and crisp it under the griller to finish. Good thinking!

I've been up for 6 hours. I've had 4 hot drinks and I just realised I didn't give little dog his breakfast. He didn't even complain. Bad mummy.

13
aussie.zone

Isn't it a horrid feeling! I feed our cats in the morning when I wake up, but noticed if I sleep in on the weekend they help themselves to their kibble (which they're very good at rationing). If I feed them later in the morning they still eat it but then likely throw it up, so I usually feed them in the afternoon if I have slept in.

I forgot for the first time ever the other week, and we've had them for nine years. They didn't complain but it wasn't until the next morning when I got their food out that I realised. I felt so fucking terrible.

8

Sometimes he does his little dance so I feed him (he gets dry stuff in the morning) takes a nibble then goes back to bed. If it's still there in the afternoon he scoffs it down so that he still gets his wet stuff.

6

You’re very welcome!

I just try to be a little silly and hope to pump some joy into people’s day if I can. I hope it made you smile.

Can I just say that I kinda love that there's more comments in here than over on /r... teehee!

11
aussie.zone

Sounds like a great day to start the weekend. I did the gym thing this morning, but thinking of hitting the sauna after work just to shvitz in the weekend.

Oh yeah we're all about talking shit here. And good shit too.

4
aussie.zone

Love me some good shit talk. I'm trying to be good and be in the gym more, but between work, friendships and new relationship, where's the time/desire to adult?!

3

Grown up life gets full on, but self care is important. Sacrifices need to be made. For me it was my kids. I've just decided to neglect them in lieu of working out. Hope they're doing well.

2
aussie.zone

we're all powered by the great breakfast spread Bacon provides every day.

6
aussie.zone

I'm not stepping on bacon's shoes but if anyone wants a croissant I'll sneak a few out from the ridiculously large hotel brekky spread.

11

I gotta say, one of my favourite things about these DT's, is when we're talking about family members, pets, etc. we use our username along with anything identifying the relationship. I'm really enjoying it.

11

Ahh Friday. Today my partner comes over and I'm so excited to see them. I haven't seen them for like three weeks! (Usually we see each other each weekend but they had work all weekend both times) I can't wait till we can live together because ugh.

11

Going out for Japanese tonight. If there are gyoza i'll smuggle a few back and put them with this mornings croissants to share with the class.

Yay friday! Hopefully i can get some errands done in the morning

7

I used to work for a small company and we'd all say good morning to each other. No problem. One guy left to go elsewhere and wanted to know if it was OK to stand at the door and yell "Good Morning Everyone" so he didn't have to individually say it to 33 people before he got to his desk.

5
aussie.zone

Best thing in that situation, be the first in so you don't have to walk around and greet everyone.

OR (this is my thing) when I join a meeting, I try to be last so all I have to say it 'Good Morning everyone'

4
aussie.zone

Maybe it's some hidden trauma, but someone overly chipper does not come off as genuine to me. Like morning talk show hosts that are excited over some mundane bullshit.

why is it that very hot coffee is more satisfying than hot coffee?

9
aussie.zone

The relief after the burning pain adds a bit of that 'je nes sais quoi'

6

maybe the increase in blood supply to mouth and throat means that more caffeine will be absorbed on the second sip

6
aussie.zone

Could be the way your tastebuds are tuned - it's the reason why some beer can taste differently depending on the pub even though it's the same brand. Beers is often stored at slightly different temperatures, and even 0.1 of a degree can make a big difference to the way our tongues interpret taste.

5
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

beer also tastes different according the shape of the glass it's served in, it's the little bubbles, different shape glasses cause different amounts of bubbles to form, when CO2 bubbles come out of a liquid the acidity of the beer is decreased, more bubbles, sweeter beer

7

all those years living in Belgium drinking beer and going to beer museums were not wasted!

5

Same goes for the way the glasses are cleaned - any soap residue prevents the bubbles from forming properly and makes the beer go flat quickly. A good way to tell is if you get the rings (or lace) around the glass every time you drink - if they're present it means the glass has been cleaned properly. If they don't then likely there's the slightly bit of soap left over.

5

I reckon there's a difference in taste with hot vs cold coffee, maybe not too much between hot and very hot though.

5

I necked mine and forgot to stop and appreciate it. Now I feel like I missed out.

1

I feel the same. Also a very cold drink is nicer than just a cold one. Crisper. I suppose the extra hot element adds a kind of sharpness too now that I think about it.

1

Just got cc’ed on an email from our corporate overlords and in the thread is one of them saying, basically, I’m not doing my job. They trash talked me to a customer. Would you complain? I’m thinking I’m gonna reach out to his manager. I’ve recently been told we all have to be buddies and respectful and this just rubs me up the wrong way.

3
aussie.zone

I’ve realised a random thing about myself: I hate when people make “observations” about me and tell me. People do it a lot about my style. I guess I like to look nice, but have a fairly simple style and a clear colour palette because I don’t like to buy lots of clothes, so people often say things like, “You really like to wear X colours don’t you?”

It’s the kind of comment that isn’t a compliment so maybe I’m just defensive but it feels like a judgement or I’m being asked to explain myself and it sets me on edge. I don’t know how to respond either.

They are probably just trying to bond and show they’ve noticed but my whole life I’ve attracted unwanted attention and commentary on my appearance so it’s annoying to me. Do other people have their appearance and clothes commented on a lot? Is that just something people do? It never occurs to me to say such a thing to someone else unless I’m giving a compliment or being like, “Ooh is that a new jacket?”

8
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

freakiest thing is when some woman down my regular bar started copying my hair and make up

and then she started to comment on my accent and enunciation 😬

6
aussie.zone

Nooo I’ve also had a copy cat! She even went to my hairdresser and asked for the same hair and my hairdresser refused hahaha.

3
aussie.zone

I used to work in a design oriented industry and yes it was very common to comment on / receive comments on the appearance (clothing, hair, glasses, shoes etc). My last job was full of engineers and a lot of male, and nobody seems to care what you look like. My current job has a lot of female in the office and they do tend to notice more and do make comments on what each other’s wearing.

I usually just say thanks and compliment on something they wear/ have and then move on. It’s almost like “morning, how are you?” Type of small talk.

5
Waddlekinsreply
aussie.zone

Same, i mean i dont work in design but its standard to make small talk so outfits is one subject to make small talk about ___

5

My brain struggles so much with small talk this is probably what it is! I will have to come up with some standard responses 🥲

3
aussie.zone

That makes a lot of sense! I don’t mind commentary and discussion on clothes I guess, it’s just the way some people say it. Sometimes it feels more judgemental and I’m sensitive to it. But a favourite tactic of my bullies at high school was to “compliment” or take a tone like they were “innocently commenting on” something about what I was wearing or how I looked but they meant it as an insult 🙄 I think I just have an over sensitive anxiety response to such things now. I’ll try to get more used to it!!

3
Waddlekinsreply
aussie.zone

Hmm. I dont really get what the diff is between you asking if thats a new jacket and soneone asking if you like particular colours?

5
aussie.zone

I suppose for me it’s that mine is a question (and I’d probably tack on a compliment such as “I like it!”) whereas people just tend to make statements and I’m just like “… yes” haha. I think it’s just my autism showing on this issue LOL 🙈

4
aussie.zone

I think a lot of it depends on the delivery. Those sorts of comments can come across as judgemental and/or an attempt to put you into a box (which has high potential to then lead to comments if you ever do anything outside what they have decided is "your" style).

Sometimes it can also be hard to tell what is intended, until you have a pattern of similar comment from the same person.

5

Exactly - now that I’ve thought about it I do feel there’s a difference. Ie. I have friends who will make a comment and it doesn’t bother me as I know they’re not trying to categorise me.

But there’s a way some people go about it that just feels off to me. Like the much older man who was my tutor who decided to take on this weird paternal attitude toward me. His commentary on my clothes in front of everyone was not wanted lol.

3

“You really like to wear X colours don’t you?”

yeah that's not a compliment. That's a backhander

4

Hmm, I don’t know. I pretty much wear the Melbourne uniform. Although the nice upside has been when friends/acquaintances point out something they’ve seen that they associate with my style. It’s nice sometimes, especially if I feel I’ve been really lazy and haven’t made much effort lately.

But I totally hear you. Unwanted comments are not fun.

4
Hongohonesreply
aussie.zone

Yeah, since socially transitioning people comment on my appearance a lot more. It's one of joys I'm finding of living female but for me it's pretty new and I'm still clunky at putting together outfits. I don't have a big wardrobe and I don't want one so I'm often in the same clothes. I also tend toward the same colours. I understand why you feel it's a bit of backhanded "compliment". Like they're thinking, they always wear the same clothes...

I'm guessing your palette isn't the usual black and beige?

3
omoikirireply
aussie.zone

I’m guessing your palette isn’t the usual black and beige?

How dare you call me out like this.

I sometimes wear grey too 🥺

5
Hongohonesreply
aussie.zone

Usual doesn't mean bad, I just like colourfull clothes. no offense intended

2

Haha don’t worry, lady. I am 1000% not being serious. My wardrobe is almost entirely black and beige/brown and I’ll own it. Because I look damn good in it.

2
aussie.zone

Yes that’s a bit how it feels! Years ago I basically only wore black and white as I was very very poor and just stuck to those as it’s easier to make outfits. But when people would comment on it it’s like, no I’m not making a fashion statement I just have no money 😂

Now I incorporate richer colours which I suppose you don’t see as often.

3
Hongohonesreply
aussie.zone

Melbourne needs more colour in my opinion. Grey skies? Wear something red or orange and project warmth. Black puffer jacket? No! Red leather jacket. All the new hair colours we see these days do brighten things up somewhat though.

5
aussie.zone

Agree! I refuse to own a black coat for this reason. Plus hot fashion tip for anyone out there: black just casts more shadows on your face, makes you look more tired and dull. Of course, only matters if you care but a coat in one of your best colours is much more fun 💃🏻

3
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

I usually get a white or ivory coat but gees they get filthy when you live in the cbd , got a dark blue coat this year

4
aussie.zone

I would love to wear more white and creams, sooo chic. Was going to get one in my latest jacket purchase but in the end went with camel. There’s no way the cream one with city life plus baby would still look nice after the first 5 minutes. I try to go for dark but jewel tones!

5

I once had the most beautiful ivory long length down mk puffer, some dude tried to steal it at the bar!! I stopped him when he was half way out 🥺

2
Hongohonesreply
aussie.zone

It sure is and you can play with eyeshadow palette a lot more with less muted colours. I recently got the Abby Roberts Morphe palette from Mecca and I just love it, really striking colours and great quality makeup. I'm still pretty average at application, but practise is all I need there.

2
Seagoon_reply
aussie.zone

It might be worthwhile to get a one off consultation with a ( real ) make up artist , they can show you what colours look good on you, can show different styles and give help with technique. Miss Seagoon used to give consultations for trans people when she lived in Europe. I had no idea it was a thing until she told me. I reckon it's cool. Anything to help people live happier lives is a good thing.

4

I can get away with my skill set at the moment, it's getting better now I do it nearly every day but a makeup artist consult would be a great pampering and would teach me a lot I'm sure.

2

I just looked it up, those colours look sooo fun! It really is just practise, like painting or something. Your hand gets steadier and remembers what to do. Though I have been wearing make up for 15 years and still have moments like, idk wtf I’m doing 😂 Just hoping for the best some days!

4

I mean it's a running joke between a friend and I that she has too many black tshirts but 1) she started it and 2) I've seen her wear a black tshirt once in over a decade.

3
aussie.zone

Hey Goddess! Thanks!

Woke up and had the opportunity to chair another meeting which was nice. This AA group have become my newest family. They are teaching me things I'd never thought of and making me be incredibly honest with myself. If anyone's been in aa you'll know what I'm talking about.

Going to the wonderful cafe around the corner for breakfast then get some groceries and I'll come home and make a vege stew. Got a bit extra work to do as well but looks like a lazy-ish friday. Maybe I'll do some music and start looking at all the work leads I got yesterday. Really need to start taking time to do some exercise for it's own sake as well.

Enjoy today, its a bit longer then yesterday!!! Weather looks grim, but we don't have to be grim in outlook.

Sodding Flybuys.
I was doing the spend $50 for 4 weeks promo at Coles except I did week 3 online and they omitted an item which took it under the total. I phoned Flybuys and was told by the CS rep that she'd done an override and all I had to do was phone them when the points for week 4 came in.
So of course when I phone I get clueless CS rep who couldn't find my details, my week 3 points or any details of the previous interaction and "The points weren't added because it was an online transaction" and "I'll have to send in the receipt." Which I just did and got the generic 'we will endeavour to answer your query within 5 business days'. Sure, Jan.

I've started my uni subject, which is currently all about plant identification. There are so many new terms. It's making my head fuzzy.

Plants in general. The subject is science of gardening, and this bit is all about the classification of plants and how to identify them. There are about 14 billion different terms for just the shape of leaves!

I hear you. I've been an arborist for almost 25 years, and I still struggle. I actually had the chance to learn Latin back in primary school in England, but gave it away as I thought it wouldn't be useful...

I'm glad I don't have to try and memorise any of it, just get my head around enough that I can understand the descriptions in the identification guides.

bringing impulse buying to the workplace by picking up new tickets while not actually closing or indeed looking at any of my existing urgent tickets

Three weeks of shit tipping has knocked me off top spot in the work comp. My heart breaks

I think the one thing that truly stands out here in Indo is the amount of hellos.

Everyone says hello. Not just the hotel staff, everyone.

It's exhausting I love it.

Lol - I need to get into the habit of finding the thread instead of going into what I think is the thread only to find it's days (nay, weeks) old.

Anyone else here buy from FairFeed? What're your thoughts on their customer service?

Those croissants at brekky are dangerous.

Lazy day for me today so if anyone needs me I'll be by the pool.

Got a refund on my lunch delivery because it was crazy late, which I'm glad about because I tried a pumpkin spice latte and I'm happy to not be paying money for it. I'm going full Melbourne coffee snob on this one.. the Americans just don't get coffee.

Does anyone else get quite easily influenced when seeing food and wanting it. Even if you’re not hungry? I really need to stop looking at food on Instagram 😅 I have new food cravings almost every night. So easy to look at food and go down a rabbit hole on Instagram. Tonight I have a hankering for Xiaolong bao (dumpling soup)

It's been a long time since I've had a cup of tea and a biscuit on a Friday night. What should I have a tic toc, chewy caramel Tim Tam or raspberry shortcake biscuit?

Oh wow, Brandon Boyd was the guest judge on this weeks episode of drag race.

Why? I don’t know.

But I forgot how attractive he was. Almost even more so now. He’s aged like a fine wine.

hunting a gaming mat and dear god it's like living in the goddamn 90's again. Ooo I like this one. I hate amazon. One source found so far: Ebay. $100 pre-owned + $100 shipping -_-

calligraphy practice drama. I'm using some sumi ink and it's thinner than calligraphy ink and is bleeding a little. Doesn't help it's poor quality paper. Maybe I should ignore it and just do the practice, eh.

I was gonna smash out a few bike rides this weekend, but the BOM is predicting it's gonna rain… Why are we cursed so?

Nothing shits me more than my iPhone playing up. It’s not even a big deal, it’s just not playing a song and struggling to load a couple of websites, but man it is annoying cause it’s usually so flawless. When I was on android there was always weird little problem, but you just kind of dismissed it cause hey it’s android. But an iPhone for some reason I hold to a higher standard.

On the metro site as I was trying to check train time table and I see only 4 lines are green and every other line is yellow with Work Alert. Jeepers

So I noticed that the DT on Reddit is back. What happened in the end - like with the protest and stuff?
