I saw a post a long time ago about really nice versions of everyday things. Until then I had been using paper mate wal mart mechanical pencils or whatever mech pencil I happen to find lying around. You know how your mom has a gallon ziplock bag of assorted pens and pencils…

I decided to try a rotring rapid pro mechanical pencil and it was soooo much better. I’ve since moved on to the 600.

Rotting 600 is the best pencil I’ve ever used. It’s also been my go to Christmas gift for anyone I see taking notes by hand.

I was the kinda kid who started the school year with a 30 pack of pencils. Less than 2 weeks later I'd start asking to borrow pencils

This continued into university; as you can imagine, borrowing was no longer an option.

I told myself, "let's get a really nice mechanical pencil and see how long we can hang onto it."

That was 12 years ago; he stayed functional for a surprisingly long time. My clumsy-ass hands eventually dropped him enough and rendered him non-functional, but I still have him. I still carry him around (now safely in a purse) just as a point of pride.

In fact, just today I was investigating a 0.7mm drill bit in hopes of reviving him.

I eventually replaced him with an 800 which survived for a few years but was eventually lost. I recently purchased another 800 as a congratulatory "new big boy job" gift to myself and promptly dropped and broke it about 3 weeks later. I still have that one but dont know how or if it can be fixed.

Despite the mishaps with the 800s, hanging onto this pencil for over a decade is honestly a huge point of pride for me. Thanks for posting this.

Rotrings breaking when you drop them is really common which I wish it didn't, they're heavy and that makes the tip really fragile, I managed to repair a blended tip on my other rotring sometime ago. The picture of your rotring is really beautiful, I think it resembles well the phrase "To be loved is to be changed", you used it over a decade! you are right by feeling proud. I hope you can repair it though, I think jetpens sells replacements for the tip, and caps for protecting it as well while you are not using it. I haven't been able to purchase neither of those because the shipping to my location is expensive so I can't tell from my experience.

Lmao I read your notes closer, you know exactly what I'm talking about in terms of repair-ability. Looks like a systems or mfg engineering class? I wrote almost my entire mechanical engineering degree (All ten years of it!) with my 600.

Wow impressive, that's what I'm aiming for, I'm a computer engineering student, and recently a mathematics student, I really like writing math with the rotring.

I wouldn't want to write Navier-Stokes or FEA matrices with any other pencil tbh. I was a course short of a math minor and am currently investigating Computational Science Masters programs; I REALLY like CFD.

I tried to bore out the original tip but I'm going to have to purchase a new one from JetPens. I'm tempted to trim the lead guide back by half or more once it arrives but I'm still simmering on that idea.

WE ARE BACK!!! Glad that your Rotring is back on the game man 😎. enjoy it as much as you can.

The 600 held up for the majority of that decade. I was able to repair the exposed lead guide but at this point its entirely pushed in and deformed such that lead won't advance. I know at least one hobby shop nearby that sells 0.7mm drill bits and I'd like to try reviving it before replacing it.

I hoped the retractable brass carriage on the 800 would handle drops better and protect the lead guide. Three weeks in I drop it with the carriage out and it landed on the tip. Something internal broke and I couldnt figure out how to disassemble it on my own. Can probably look it up, maybe message jetpens since I bought it through them.

Repairing my OG sounds better, though. There's a lot of history there. The guide is so deep into the barrel it'll be tough to bend it out of shape again lol. Considering my tendency to drop things I'd much rather have something repairable.

Man, this pencil is even more important to me than I realized. Thank you, truly.
