Your guide to finding a new Email provider and supporting European companies!

The hope is that this guide and website can act as a simple way to introduce newcomers - whether it's you, friends or family - into this space and try something else besides the default options.

There is also a community-driven, open-source site ( https://purchasewithpurpose.eu/category/email/ ) that aims to make this even easier. This includes screenshots, ratings and a larger feature list.

I've also started tracking impact to help keep the momentum. If there are any other stats, please share them so I can add them to the guides and, eventually, the website.

As always, I more than welcome criticism and ideas!

I’ve been using Tuta, and while I like them as a company and for their privacy, it bothers me that I have to use their email client. It increases switching costs for me because I can’t use the same client as my previous as I switch. I also don’t like the client. I understand why they do it - to control privacy, but I don’t see why I shouldn’t have the choice and why for example using Thunderbird doesn’t still comply with that.

I don’t trust proton because of its right wing expressions. Infomaniak is (to my knowledge) not focusing on privacy.

I also switched to Tuta recently and wasn't aware until just now that it doesn't support IMAP because I hadn't gotten around to trying to set it up yet. Having found that out, I completely agree with you. It's true that supporting IMAP would be less secure, but it should be my choice as the customer (and yes, I am the customer because I'm not on the free tier) if I want to knowingly make that trade-off.

I'm still not sure if I want to switch to Tuta, Proton or Mailbox...

To me, Proton seems like the one that will enshittificate the fastest. But I could be wrong, tho. Anyone has any opinions, insights, things that could be insightful?

+1 for Mailbox. Turned a fan since I started using it seriously. Actually it can do much more as it replaced the whole Google Suite for me. Especially the office capabilities are quite astounding.

I am in the process of leaving proton for this and political reasons. Im looking at mailbox and tuta but still haven't decided.

Why not try one at a time?

Or do what I did and switch to all of them. One can never have too many email addresses :P

Way too much over-engineered to be useful for any newcomers. Not informative at all without tons of additional explanation.

Fastmail servers are still in the US.

As far as I know they have not removed them.

Anyone know an EU provider that supports OIDC (or LDAP in a pinch) so it can hook up to an Authentik instance? I'm currently looking for an alternative to my US provider.

Switched to mailbox.org a few months ago. Happy about it, especially since the recent redesign.
