The "no blood for oil" sign hits hard. I saw that when I was young and we invaded Iraq 🤮

I've seen a theory that even World War One had oil involved in part of the contribution to its cause and tensions.

chocratesreply
piefed.world

Can't speak to the cause, but the west carved up the ottomans after the war for oil and some of that can be directly tied to the shit on the past 30 years

sh.itjust.works

The existence of Israel and possibly even Syria are both direct results of Britain and France fucking over the Hashemite. Oh also Faisal I also wanted to shitcan the Saudis so add Saudi Arabia to the list.

Israel is it's own can it worms. It was an imperialist project from the start.

2

Moreso pointing out that if Britain and France actually stuck to their deal and werent massive cunts Israel would not exist as it is now. There would've been no British Palestine to cause problems because the territory would've been under a local generally liberal government instead of a distant uncaring empire.

Not much of a theory, there was a reason Churchill converted warships from coal to oil.

6
Warl0k3reply
lemmy.world

Well... okay that's mainly because oil is superior to coal in almost every logistical and mechanical respect. Even bunker oil is a superior fuel.

Boy, have I got an opportunity for you! Sand, sun, the respect and admiration of the exotic local peoples....

7

I see a lot of people comparing this to Iraq but I need to illustrate that Bush, Cheney, and the CIA worked hard to present (inaccurate) intel of aluminium tubes to US Congress, NATO, and the UN.

That doesn't compare in the slightest to Trump's reckless disregard for laws, democracy, diplomacy, or human life. This is actually a much worse start than Iraq, so far.

no blood for oil

Republicans are a one trick pony. There will always be blood for oil if you elect them.

3

Wasn't his whole campaign based around isolationism? I think it's the one policy that pretty much everybody actually agreed with.

The US needs to stop getting involved in situations because it always ends badly. Always.

Of course it turns out he was lying about that too. Classic.

31
lemmy.zip

Oh shit the americans actually are doing something about it

Well, some tiny fraction of americans, but I didn't expect even that

The protests in the summer were huge. These were last-minute.

barnaculreply

Our corporate media censored them HARD. Largest protest in US history and it was reported underneath Kim Kardashian's underwear in the NYT. Not making it up.

23

Yup.

Our media has utterly failed our democracy. It's one of the most blatant indicators of a democracy coming to an end.

Buckle up.

14

Yeah it's not as if there have been near constant protests exactly like this about basically everything that's been happening.

5

They're not doing shit. They are home by 9pm and thats the end of it.

At least if they were paid you'd get out of it. They do literally nothing. Pictures for the news and business as usual. Just as the oligarchs like.

We all saw the slave markets that happened when gaddafi fell. Oil CEOs need to burn (ideally in some kind of legal process) for this. This kind of intervention always results in a corrupt colonial leader (best case) or an absolute power vacuum (worst case). Either way I'm sure that the number of people fleeing from venezuela are about to skyrocket.

Its money that would be better spent on healthcare imo. Oil companies are the most subsidized "private" businesses in existence.

29
HugeNerdreply
lemmy.ca

Do you really really think this was done at the behest of oil CEOs? Hmm.

-6

Yes and no. Did they rubber stamp this plan? Prob not. Have they been bitching to republicans about venezuela nationalizing their infrastructure for 20 years? Yes.

I mean look at cuba. The US has been after them for 70 years because it fucked up a bunch of mobster casino guys grand master plans. The US government will spend 20 dollars on petty business grievances from half a century ago before it pays a dollar helping like a mom in the US pay medical bill for having a baby today.

Edit: also this

34

Trump literally admitted to sharing the classified invasion plans with oil executives before it happened.

7
lemmy.world

Way to go Americans, general strikes are the only thing that scares them. No one producing the goods they can exploit and lucrate from is the best way to scare those rich parasites and make them reconsider their infamous decisions.

23

Imo its more about stopping the planes and shutting down airports. Something that could probably be done with a couple of semi trucks or a few staffing strikes.

Republicans always cave when the airports shut down.

1

"Military intervention"? We're applying the Russian tactics of calling an act of war something different? "Special military operation" style. Right.

18

The media will ignore them, and most people won't even realize they now live under a fascist regime.

But hey. Trump sure showed those Ghayze a thing or two.

9
lemmy.world

Anyone celebrating this has no grasp of U.S. history and the other times we've done this and how badly it went every time.

There are repercussions for invading a nation and abducting their leader (and then stealing their oil).

6

Discourse 5 years from now: Why are there so many Venezuelans trying to cross our southern border? No solution other than increasing immigration enforcement I guess.

7

I mean, it's good Maduro is gone, he was really bad for that country. Buuuut that's about it, being positive about all of this. This isn't the way to deal with it. The US has no right doing this (war crime). This isn't about what's best for Venezuela, it's about what's best for Trump his pockets. Maybe the US should think of dealing with it's own dictator first.

Be careful, apparently I got banned from lemmy.ml for mentioning that the friends I have living in Venezuela see Maduro and "his goons" gone (his words) as great news. The future though is not bright and the people are still very sceptical of Trumps motives. Obviously for us here in the US the writing is on the wall for anyone who's lived through Iraq.

11

Yeah I guess. It's kids confusing what's happening there. They're being given so much information. Whether right or wrong.

2

I agree. The Trump admin says things, but they don't seem grounded in reality at all. Makes things a lot more confusing.

1

Why is it so hard to believe people have friends in other countries?

2

It doesn't matter whether they're happy about it or not, it says a very dangerous precedent and shouldn't be allowed.

It shouldn't have been allowed in the past either but I wasn't alive then

Jeeze yeah, clearly this wasn't good enough, I can't imagine why anyone bothered since clearly it doesn't matter. Didn't even care enough to print up pithy new signs or anything. Barely even pretending to care. Frankly how dare they, I'm just disgusted at their behavior!

I also went grocery shopping and brushed my teeth today, neither of which prevented me from attending the protests. Turns out sluts are capable of being politically and sexually active.
