I remember learning in an anthropology class about how the pre-agrarian/hunter gatherer era was actually maybe the best time for humans in terms of amount of leisure

I think it just really matters where you were. In the Amazon? It was a huge food forest with an enormous river right there, not much gathering required
In African savannah? Well, now you need to do some walking, and hunting probably isn't optional
