How are you accessing lemmy, or reddit? (mobile apps, desktop?)

Let us know how you are accessing lemmy (or reddit). Both are going to see some big updates shortly, reddit in a negative way, while lemmy is only improving services.

I am putting together some information to help new users get the most out of lemmy, so that it feels user-friendly and easily accessible. Stay tuned

For those of you using lemmy in a mobile browser, most browsers support "installing" the site as a progressive web app (PWA). This will create a shortcut which opens the site fullscreen without the usual browser address bar, giving it a much more "appy" feel.

For Safari on iOS:

  1. Browse to your local lemmy instance (e.g. lemmy.world)
  2. Click on the share button located at the center bottom of the screen
  3. Scroll to add to the home button at the bottom of the UI
  4. Click on add to the home button
  5. Click on add button

For the Chrome, Firefox and most other mobile browsers:

  1. Browse to your local lemmy instance (e.g. lemmy.world)
  2. Tap the 3-dot Firefox menu
  3. Select Install

I'm not familiar with Iphones though.

I'm using Jerboa 90% of the time for Lemmy. For Reddit I was 100% in RIF, but I'm off of there now ofc.

7

Right now for Lemmy I am using the Safari web browser page bookmarked onto my iPhone home screen. I have both Memmy and Mlem installed on my iPhone (beta versions), but both are missing a lot of basic features at the moment. So I mostly use the bookmarked safari page. I am eagerly waiting for iOS apps to be released.

I'm using Jerboa to access lemmy on my phone. I've only looked in on Reddit once since the sub blackouts and used Boost.

4

I'm using the jerboa app on my (android) phone. I've used the website a couple of times (installed as an an app) but have found the app easier.... I've always used the official Reddit app (really only been on Reddit for just over a year and a half) and only using it to check out the sewing subs cos they don't seem to have moved over ... yet....

But agree that Reddit is very quickly losing its appeal, and I definitely prefer it here on Lemmy...

4

Safari on my phone, but it leaves a lot to be desired. I’m hoping someone will develop a good iPhone app soon.

3

I use memmy, and then use mobile safari only if i need to do something memmy can’t.

3

Browser on iPad for lemmy. Apollo app for Reddit (for as long as I'm there anyway).

3

So far I've just used lemmy.world on a browser on both laptop and kindle. If there's an app just for lemmy, I don't know what it is.
I do still scroll through Reddit a bit (using RIF on my phone), but it's becoming such a dumpster fire, it's losing its appeal quickly.

Hi! I'm using the Jerboa app on an Android phone. Not using reddit much, but if I do, it's through the website. So glad to see this community here! Thank you for all that you do.

3

Also using jerboa on lemmy. I've pretty much abandoned reddit. I was a long time RIF user and am sad to see it go. So happy to see activity here!

I used the official reddit app for mobile (uninstalled now), I'm using both Jeroba app and browser for lemmy, and I'm using browser for kbin. I really only use my phone and I don't have a problem with accessing what I need.

An even split of desktop browser and Jeroba.

And for Reddit, an even split between RiF and old.reddit (with RES) on desktop.

2

Here I use mobile Safari and desktop Safari. I only peek at Reddit for a couple of health related subs that didn’t migrate, and I use Bacon Reader. Once that goes away I’ll use old.reddit.com in the browser until they kill that too

2

Jerboa on mobile. Reddit app although have been weaning myself off in favour of Lemmy.

Was using jerboa but it's having issues with the new update so I am now trying lemmynade. As for reddit i was just using the official app but I am no longer using reddit.

And editing this to say I am not using liftoff

2

haha lemmynade...love it. The latest Jerboa update requires your local lemmy instance to be running version 0.18+. Lemmy.world has not yet updated to version 0.18 as they are waiting for captcha fixes to resolve spam bot concerns. It's being worked on though!

Wef wef web app on iPhone. Looks so much like Apollo, I forget where I am sometimes

2

Mlem (beta) for Lemmy - sometimes just Firefox browser though. Hoping Mlem will keep improving.

2

I'm accessing this via Kbin.social (ie via Kbin, not quite Lemmy) on the ios Arc browser (no app yet for kbin, afaik), and am still connected to (but not actively using) Reddit via Apollo ios app, while it lasts.
