I would be trying with open source, so I need some expert opinion so that I don't run into a breakdown even before I learn to walk.

Most likely, yes.

Although, do note that some DE pairings (e.g. GNOME and KDE) don't mix together very well and might break eachother if you're not careful (evilwm probably won't by virtue of being a WM and not a full DE, though).
