Yup, there is/was a thing where stores wouldn't let cashiers sit down because, according to customer service logic (and the opinions of a few extremely opinionated customers), it looks "lazy".
The main difference between Aldi and current US commercial models is that Aldi does not undertake price scalping. Walmart et al appear to work out price scalping to generate the greates shareholders value at the expense of losing the poorest customers to other stores. In Europe, Aldi and Lidl have cleaned up and stayed true to principles.
I love how fast the checkout is. The thing I detest most about my local Dillons (Kroger) is how long the lines get because they rely on self checkout and refuse to employ enough staff to open more checkout lanes. Aldi is lightning fast by comparison.

Aldi is cheaper and better quality. Also, they dont have 20 self serve checkouts ran by a single underpaid, overworked employee
long ago aldi was hit or miss but now im hard pressed to have something they sell not be that great.

aldi is the only place they are allowed to sit. cashiers in the USA never sit. it is seen as lazy.
