It confuses me too. Most HRT medications were originally developed for cis people. I find it cruel to restrict access for trans and gender non-conforming people when the same treatments are readily available to cis people.

HRT for cis people is pretty common as far as I am aware. Medicine that affirms your birth gender are readily available. Estrogen for cis women and testosterone for cis men is common to treat deficiencies. Many women take E during menopause.

I think our societal concept of gender is harmful. Men and women are not fully distinct classes with no overlaps or commonalities. Adult sex hormones are not innately gendered. Everyone has a mixture of hormones.

I think it is harmful to reflexively dismiss testosterone for cis women and estrogen or progesterone for cis men. If changing someone's non-dominant hormones levels could give a benefit, it should be studied and considered.

Other purported benefits include decreased fatty tissue, increased muscle mass and cognitive performance, and even better skin.

Emphasis mine, but that seems… unlikely

It happened to me. My skin was chronically dry and painful my whole adult life, but I'm magically normal on T. I also sweat more and have to wash my face multiple times a day.

It also really helped my emotional regulation not by changing my emotions, but moderating how intense they feel. It takes a lot more to make me cry now. Stopping the menstrual cycle was part of that as well, and I've not had a single yeast infection or hagfish attack on T.

I sometimes joke to myself that I'm just faking the whole trans thing to gain access to these treatments.

Tbh, extra dry skin is the one skin condition I would have expected it to improve. That’s really good to know about the emotions. I’m probably an egg who’s very afraid of turning into a rage machine, but I’d much prefer occasional controllable anger to every intense emotion causing tears (which it currently does for me, even positive ones if they’re strong enough).
