Super Mario RPG coming to Switch was NOT on my bingo card, but what an awesome surprise. The game that originally made me fall in love with the turn based RPG genre.

44

Same here! I'm 33 but Geno was a fan favourite on GameFAQs back in the day.

I was not expecting Pikmin 1 and 2 HD ports, but I'll take them.

I'll wait for the physical release to have all 4 and show them to my grand kids 25 years from now, for the release of Pikmin 5.

20

Nintendo is really starting to push Pikmin again and I love it. Glad to have all the games on the switch. Capitalize on the popularity of the system to grow the franchise. Hopefully it's not another 25 years this time!

6

Haha, let's hope we don't have to wait that long, but you never know with Nintendo, if they think they don't have any new idea for the game, it is going to disappear in their locker for next 20 years.

Come on Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD Remake physical release on Switch! Big Brother Nintendo, I know you can do it!

Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks like just the breath of fresh air the 2D Platformer Mario games desperately need. While I enjoyed the "New Super Mario Bros." games, there's no denying they've gotten very stale and if you've played one you've basically played them all. This looks entirely unique and different.

11

It seems to be injecting a serious does of Nintendo quirk into the traditional 2d Mario platforming formula. I'm excited to see how it all turns out!

5

Very excited for the Super Mario RPG remake. It genuinely looks fantastic.

10
lemmy.world

Agree, never finished the PS version. Would have like to see the option to play either the original or the 2D remake.

4

I’ve never seen the series but I love the art style. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

2
lemmy.world

10/10 direct for me because of the new 2D Mario.

10

I wasn't a huge fan of the NSMB series, and it always felt like they were just playing it safe. This one seems to have a similar look, but it appears they are trying some really original ideas with it.

5
lemmy.world

Yeah, it looks really fun. And not just new 2D Mario. Super Mario RPG Remake and Detective Pikachu, not to mention teaser for a new Princess Peach game.

4
Dougasreply

Indeed. Really good direct overall. The peach game really caught me off guard

Can't wait for the Arkham games to run like shit.

Nice idea though.

7

First 2 games were on PS3, so should run fine. Even Arkham Knight was early PS4, so with good optimization shouldn't be a big issue.

Will have to wait and see the actual port.

6

I remember reading somewhere long ago that the shield tv had the processing & gaming power of an Xbox 360. The shield tv shares the same chip as the Switch, And those games are X360 era. In practice though it doesn't seem to work very well.

lemmy.world

Holiday season is feeling a little weak for nintendo, no?

6

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is the only one, it seems to be an exclusive for now.

Not counting any third party games, there's Super Mario RPG in November and Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Detective Pikachu for October. Seems like a good winter to me, but then again I am not a huge day 1 purchaser, so my expectations are always a bit different.

1
kbin.social

Assuming this is actually Switch footage in this Sonic Superstars trailer, it seems to look and perform better on the Switch than I expected. Will still probably be picking that up on PS5, though.

Super Mario RPG & Persona 5 Tactica on the same day oooo

6

Oh yeah, I didn't even notice.

Not going to play P5T on launch, as I still have to play Persona 5, but can't wait for Super Mario RPG.

1
lemmy.world

I was just telling my girlfriend we need to play Pikmin before pikmin 4 comes out. We pre-ordered it when we got tears of the kingdom with the NSO voucher

6
lemmy.world

I haven't played any Pikmin game. Was thinking about starting 3 after TotK, but I wonder if I should start with the first one...

Going to see the trailer and reviews to see what condition the games are in, before making a decision.

4
lemmy.world

You can't go wrong with any of them, as they are all a bit unique in their own way.

  1. Overarching timer forcing you to work somewhat efficiently to complete the game. Puzzles and difficulty are definitely the easiest in the series, but still provide a fun challenge to newcomers and veterans alike
  2. No overarching timer allowing for a more laid back approach to completing. Introduces a 2nd captain and much more challenging/replayable end game content (a lot of people hold P2 in very high regards, and consider the end game content to be the most difficult in the series)
  3. Technically there is an overarching timer, but it's implemented in such a way that doesn't create as much stress or pressure like the timer from P1 does. Introduces multiple captains that add another layer of complexity to puzzles as well as optimizing your daily efficiency. Has a very helpful world map that shows the location of objectives, captains, and loose Pikmin. The Deluxe edition has a slew of additional content that I haven't even fully completed, but I believe they're "prequel" missions that help to explain some of the events that happen before the start of the game.
6
lemmy.world

Thanks for the detailed response!

I am leaning towards starting from the first. But I am not going to start anything until I have completed ToTK, so its not an urgent decision.

2
lemmy.world

No problemo! I love the Pikmin games, so I was stoked to whip that up. I'm more or less in the same boat as you, all of my time outside of work has either been devoted to yard projects, DRG, or ToTK. What's your progress on ToTK so far?

2
lemmy.world

Going for the last regional quest. Was holding on it while doing some exploring, but now going for it. About 65 hours in, with around 60 shrines. As for general exploration, I have covered about 1/4th of Chasm, and about same amount of Sky Islands.

How far along are you?

2
lemmy.world

I've got all the regional quests done, probably over half of the depths discovered, but not many sky islands done. I'm over 105 hours in with 73 shrines done 😅

2

Wow. 105 is lots of hours. The way I am going, I believe I would probably finish the game between 80-90 hours, let's see...

No, it's the second one on SNES. Genealogy of Holy War.

4
lemmy.world

Ah okay. I am new to Fire Emblem, what was so special about this one, if you don't mind me asking? Or is it just a personal favourite.

2
Palteosreply
lemmy.world

Considered one of the best in the series by a lot of people in the fandom. Had a pretty dark story compared to other games in the series, even the newer ones. To elaborate more would spoil some stuff but know there's more death and more mature themes. Probably why Nintendo is avoiding a remake. I suggest getting the translated rom and playing it. If you like Fire Emblem you'll like it for sure.

2

Thanks for the info and recommendation, I am going to add it to my list.

I am pretty new to FE. First FE was Heroes, which I only played a little bit, next was Three Houses, which I liked but not the monastery parts. It's still on hold due to TotK. After finishing Three Houses, want to give Engage a try, but before that going to try the GBA one, coming to NSO later this month.

Excited for Mario RPG and Pikmin. Fae Farms looks similar game concept to Stardew Valley to me.

5
joekar1990reply
lemmy.world

Definitely similar to Stardew in terms of storyline/objective. Love the freedom it looks like you'll have and the menus look reverse contrasted too! The fast travel map having where the characters are is so needed sometimes especially if there are characters that move constantly.

2
lemmy.world

Yeah, the game looks pretty good, but the price is holding me back right now. What about you? Thinking of getting it on launch?

1
joekar1990reply
lemmy.world

I'm not a get a game on launch kind of person. I'll usually wait a couple months before picking up my copy.

2

Yeah, I am also a patient gamer, but I do make exceptions for some things, like TotK.

2

Yeah, looks very interesting.

I am not a fan of roguelikes though, so going to wait for reviews and see if it's something I will enjoy.

1

Hyped for RPG and Wonder. Not much else piqued my interest (Peach game didn’t show enough to judge). Kamek as a racer, tho…

4

Yeah, Peach game was just a teaser, there isn't even a separate video for it.

I think this Direct covered lots of demographics, specially people new to Nintendo, who switched over with Switch, like me.

2
lemmy.world

I've definitely overhyped myself for this. Nothing interesting for me in the first 9 minutes, but holding out hope for a Metroid Prime 2+3 Remaster.

4
mvureply

Looked a bit generic but may be fun w/ non-gamer partner

Little skeeved out by the free to play bit tho...

5

Yeah I'm not thrilled about that, probably gonna be filled with paid content. I like slower paced games like that though, and like the social aspect as long as it isn't neutered.

3

Been playing it for a couple of months now on pc. It's cozy and chill. There are lots of little quests. Skills to develop (eg gathering/fishing/mining/gardening etc). NPC's to interact with and run errands for.

The only "combat" element is hunting. No fighting. (Whether that's a pro/con is a personal preference ofcourse.)

You need other players for small stuff, like chopping magical trees. Which most players are quite chill about and can be arranged on the spot. No need to join an established guild or something.

For late game, (when you have maxed all NPC's) the progress is in building/furnishing/beautifying a house, and for the completionists: catching all bugs/fish, craft all furniture, finding all the little secret quests.

The only paid content are outfits & pets. Purely cosmetic. They stated that they will keep it that way, and so far so good. So if you wish to support the company, you can. If not, there is no need to.

I didn't watch, but the list of announced games seems pretty decent. Looking forward to a new 2D Mario game, though I hope it doesn't feel as weird/floaty as NSMB did.

3

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the go with a full array of buttons is gonna be freaking amazing. One of the best games ever! I can't wait to feed on a tree frog.

3

Date is 6/21/2023 not 6/23, that's two days from now. I think you can edit the title.

3

It would be very weird to put the day after the month.

Assuming you are not being sarcastic, month/day is the US style of writing dates.

lemmy.world

It was my attempt at a joke, yes. But I meant what I said, lol.

2

Ah, well, you never know.

Actually, I personally prefer 2023-06-21 format, but I wasn't sure if I should use it. Maybe I should switch to it from now on.

Oh my God, I'm beyond HYPED for the Arkham Trilogy, I've always wanted to have them on the switch, it's going right to my wishlist !!

3
lemmy.world

If you have never played them, they are great games. One of the best super-hero game series, which raised the bar for all the games that follow, even then I would say only Insomniac's Spider-man has come close to it, but that's a very different game.

I just hope they are good ports!

3
Zedreply
lemmy.world

I did play them and I absolutely adore this franchise, I'm just so excited to know I can have them in portable mode down the line.

A bit disappointed by the absence of Origins though.

3
lemmy.world

Yeah, they ignore the origins like a plague. It's always "Arkham Trilogy", when it was not a trilogy.

2

I was hoping for some news regarding the new Layton game, kinda disappointed about that, but the Peach game sounds very interesting!

2

Personally very excited to be able to revisit the Metal Gear Solid games on the Switch. Some of them came out on the Vita, and that was fine! But compromises had to be made then due to only having 2 shoulder buttons instead of 4.

2

Mythforce looks like a barrel of fun. I hope they don't shy away from an occasional goofy 'push this button next' sequence when it's time for the action to get even more ludicrous.

2
lemmy.world

Sonic, Mario RPG and Batman have me excited. I'm somehow still a Sonic fan, so I'm in on Superstars. As a Genesis kid growing up, never got the chance to try SMRPG, but I've heard it's one of the many gems of the SNES I could never play back then, so I'll be excited to finally do so. And I loved playing Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, so it'll be fun to go back to them, and then with Arkham Knight, which I never picked up, on top of that, it's gonna be a great deal.

1

Genesis Kids Unite!

Sonic Superstars looks great, personally I am not a fan of constant pixel art, so new art style looks great. And also excited for Mario RPG, and Pikmin games for the same reason. Finally a time to enjoy the games I missed.
