There was a discussion about this yesterday. IMO it basically boils down to nobody with the ability knows why the original was good. Nobody with the power understands the mix of early cyber aesthetic, the dual roles by all actors, the amazing visual style, all came together to form something unique. Yeah, the story could be better, but the original wraps you in synthetic chrome, neon polygons, and circuitry blueprints until you forget. Legacy threw all that away for Apple aesthetic and an incoherent setting in a new grid. Then Ares took the bad aesthetics from Legacy and left the Grid. Its obvious why it sucks. The people who keep on getting rights to the IP never watched the original on repeat and just took it all in. They dont love synthwave, classic computing, and believe it or not cyberpunk enough to make a good Tron film. We should have seen neon hair on synthetic chrome faces. Nobody even understood that the green screen edits make the actors look like they are chrome. So much missed in Legacy, and since it was a world wide release and technically made more braindead people and execs assume it was more popular.
