That is beautiful.

At my previous house, I fell down from my porch - which only had two steps up to it - and broke my ankle in what turned out to be a life changing way. My neighbor found me writhing and helped me up to the porch, then my wife called the ambulance.

The EMTs helped me down the stairs, but they made me do most of the work, which is to say I had to hop while they helped me balance. Ever since that happened, I think of how annoying it would have been to do with more steps, such as on display here. It looks like it would be no fun to hop down those steps with a broken ankle (plus the initial fall probably would have done more damage).

Mostly unrelated, there's a house (actually a dormitory, I think) near me which I believe has five flights of stairs between the front door and the parking area. (I only drive by it, so I never bothered to actually count.) I'm glad I didn't have to fall or hop down that.

Kitchen & storage, probably. Not stables, the smell would be a problem. Although back then, everything and everyone stunk pretty good.
