My dinner tonight was fabulous

Image of a plate with Mediterranean chicken drumsticks, lebanese rice, hummus, toum, spicy roast pumpkin and a piece of lebanese bread. 5/5 yum yums.

Whoa, cool! Noodles AND rice together! I must read more about this...

3

It's a very forgiving dish because the noodles soak up residual moisture leaving the rice fluffy.

So my wife just told me that shortly after I went to the office, one of the cats parked herself on top of her.

With her butt right up her face.

Apparently she also just took a shit moments before.

And then she just stared at my wife like there she didn't do anything wrong.

13

I have a throat infection or a cold or flu and man it is fucking me up baaaaadly. Tomorrow is eofy work dinner at a really nice place. I just want to be able to go.

13

It is brutal. I was even 100% recovered and I'm back in it again. You should hear some of the kids coughing and spluttering in daycare.

6

I had that or not dissimilar from when I went OS 3m ago. Rude upper respiratory it lingered.

Tried to convince my manager that we should shut the office for the afternoon and go for a trip to one of the chocolatier places as a team bonding experience. It didn't work today... but I'm sure I'll try again tomorrow.

Breakfast burritos are actually the best burritos. I hope it was excellent!

It hurts the wallet. It's not a good time to be an AUD wielder in USD land at the moment. They are having their own cost of living crisis and a lot of places food items look like our prices, making them mega expensive when you convert to AUD. Plus you have to add tax and tip.

2

The last time I was here our dollar was worth more than theirs and their prices still low (2012), so with conversion tax and tip things were CHEAP. Not now that our dollar is only worth 65c to theirs and the price hikes of everything. Those cheap days are gone.

Everyone's got that one co-worker who doesn't bloody listen, right?

TWICE today I've tagged something as "need to discuss with team lead, leave this alone and I'll come back to it when I have an answer"

Twice today he's ignored that tag. He's done the work as though I hadn't said anything...and his answers have proven to be the wrong ones.

Twice today I've had to go back and fix his mistakes, on work he shouldn't have been doing because I specifically said I was investigating something about it and needed to confirm I was right.

DAMN IT, DUDE, STOP TOUCHING MY STUFF

9
aussie.zone

Brains trust. I somehow have inherited 5 heads of broccoli that I need to use this week.

Recommendations? (Other than soup which is sorta my last ditch option...)

9
aussie.zone

I've never made a gratin in my life and I haven't been having that much dairy recently so wondering if I want to go down that route. But blanching and freezing looks like a winner - that way my friends can use some when they come back too! Thanks for that link

4
aussie.zone

I can't see why you can't make it with coconut cream or another alternative. As for cheese it uses such a tiny amount you could skip it all together. Top it with breadcrumbs and butter/margarine/spread/oil. Very easy to do and there would be so many vegan recipes out there for you to try.

3

Not going to lie I'm definitely not a fan of a lot of the non dairy alternatives in dishes like gratin :( I feel like maybe I might go for something less stodgy. Might change my mind tomorrow though...

2
aussie.zone

I've definitely got broc and tuna pasta on the list for one of the heads... I couldn't do more than one head with pasta though. Reckon I'd get sick of it

2

Anchovies and a little oil in first, stir to dissolve anchovies - then broccoli etc

Oh! I didn't read the recipe :P Didn't know there's oyster sauce there. I just fry the red bean curd with ginger for a bit and then put the chinese cabbage in, followed by the rest of the veggies and what not. Baby corn goes well in there too. Do not eat immediately. The longer it sits in the fridge the better it tastes.

3
Baconreply
aussie.zone

You could just leave it out. I also add some brown sugar to it but you don't have to. It's mostly just fry the red bean curd and put in any veggies you like.

3

Ooh thanks for that rec. The place I'm staying at has plenty of East Asian ingredients and condiments so braising might be very much on the menu.

3

I vote for doing some cheese and cauliflower style pies, as they freeze well.

I’m not experienced with making pies and the online recipes look annoying. But I’d probably steam the veg, make a roux cheese sauce with garlic and onion powder, mix, then either use a pie maker or do pastie shapes with premade pastry sheets. It’s uh… a hand pie. Yeah.

Wait shit it is

Edit: You can also make a few different meals with it, it doesn’t have to be just one

3

You could make a broccoli frittata. My favourite pasta has broccoli fried with bacon, onion, pesto and a dash of cream, all done while the pasta is cooking. You could do those Indian style vege Fritters. Or a chicken and broccoli stir fry with hoisin or cashews.

3

Bit of stir fry broccoli with maybe some garlic and soy sauce?

3
aussie.zone

Wait, didn’t Smeg or someone have a broccoli pasta they really liked? A while ago a few DT regulars were cooking it for dinner. Broccoli was cooked down into a liquidy looking sauce, I can’t find it.

But Tin Eats is a very popular DT recipe site so maybe it was theirs https://www.recipetineats.com/quick-broccoli-pasta/ It uses two whole heads

Goddamn it I hate it when podcasts fade an interviewee in and out and you only hear about half a sentence before the host starts talking again. My brain is working overtime trying to follow what's being said with such an unnatural alternation of voices

8
Duenanreply
aussie.zone

Sounds like really bad editing or technique.

They’d be better off just leaving it alone and it would be perfect.

Fade in and fade out interviewees actually sounds really silly and amateurish.

3
aussie.zone

Hm well I shouldn't say interviewees but one of the subjects of the podcast. So the host will be narrating something and the pre recorded interview is playing at a very low volume in the background and will pop through when a relevant point is made (for dramatic effect) - and then that person continues talking so you're primed to expect something more, but they are quickly faded before the host comes back to talk over them and continue the narration. I just find it so distracting.

But it's actually seemingly common on big, professionally made podcasts like This American Life and this CBC podcast I'm listening to

3

Sounds odd to talk over narration I have to admit.

I think I’d be just as bothered as you as I don’t like it layered like that along with how you described it.

I listen to a few from radio stations and I’ve seen the live recording on YouTube and when they play a bite the person handling the board will signal and countdown to let people in the room when the audio bite ends for coordination.

My culinary experiment today was very successful. I took one microwave sausage roll, heated it as per instructions, then took it out of its sleeve and air fried it for 5 minutes. It went from a 3/5 yum yums to a 4/5 yum yums.

(Please note that 5/5 yum yums is reserved for homemade sausage rolls only).

Going to do some low level food shopping today, trying to figure out what I want.

I think I'm going to pick up some 2 minute noodles and some cocktail frankfurts. Not sure what else to be honest. Wouldn't mind some party pies or sausage rolls but not sure I could fit them in my freezer at the moment.

7
aussie.zone

Always wait for the party pies and sausage rolls to go on special then you pounce. Also Mrs Mac,'s microwave sausage rolls are half price every few weeks. Something like $1.25 - $1.50 compared to $3. Aldi also have microwave sausage rolls that are exactly like Mrs Mac's.

So I'm still thinking about that planner, I probably will get it and do it on afterpay since it'll be like $25 every two weeks (I also want some pens from the shop that I really like, Zebra Sarasa!). But I went to see if I have a notebook available so it can tie me over until 2024, and I found my 2020 Bullet Journal, I did Bujo-ing since like 2016 maybe 2015 so I was in the deeps with this thing. But because 2020 was well... 2020, I stopped using it because there wasn't really a point to it. But around March I started journaling essentially, and I'm reading through my thoughts and I'm so thankful for past self doing it because, yeah. Though the ADHD really shown through in 2020 because I'm talking about my stint with rollerskating (I wanna get back into it but chronic pain 😭

But in April, I said "I'm not too sure what else to put here. Most of days are at home but I guess this is for me when I'm older, if they look back at it. To you, I hope you're safe <3" and I cried. Sorry this is so long, but I have a lot of feelings.

8
aussie.zone

I did journalling in 2020 so my kids would have something to remember what it was like.. not that they'll probably want to lol

4

I don’t remember much about that year, and from what I do remember… that’s a good thing. The only good part of that awful time was getting my kitty and being with her

4
aussie.zone

If you do get it, please let us know how it is. It looked like an amazing journal, I’m still thinking about it too 😂. My bujo is more planner than journal, I use lots of stickers to brighten it up. I find it’s a good resource to look back on, hopefully you will have a great memento to look back at 2024.

2

Will do. Apparently they sell out fast, but hopefully with this year they've made more copies. I'm just going to wait and see how much my new glasses will cost me. Yeah my Bullet Journal was kind of a mixmash of both, but definently more planner than journal, it wasn't until 2020 where I started journaling. It wasn't a lot but yeah. I love the idea of bullet journaling, and while making new spreads was a form of self care, I just think now like, the idea of sitting down and creating a whole thing just feels so daunting. And yes, I know I don't have to make it look pretty, but I like to do it.

With this planner I do plan to make it look pretty, but the fact that everything is already laid out for me makes me happy.

Bought a little bit too more than I bargained for and had to cut back on some stuff.

No party pies sadly. Their single frozen sausage rolls are 1.99 each. Almost tempting but I went for t-Rex chicken nuggets and guess what I found?

Hash browns! Mislabeled and all but I grabbed a bag of those too. 1kg for $4.69.

Also frankfurts went up by 40 cents a pack :(

The Synchronicity Theory is an interesting one, basically it's the belief that meaningful coincidences are more than just chance. Say you're thinking about a friend who you haven't seen or spoken to for years, and then they call you out of the blue. It also covers seeing the same numbers repeatedly, including the time on a clock or watch.

I have the mental energy and there's so much I want to do today, headache tells me no.

5

I definitely went through a 2-3 week phase of regaining my appetite and cooking heaps. Seems to be waning though as I've more recently burnt up a lot of energy on cat stuff, moving, fast paced work stuff. After being up up up my body is starting to sink into relaxation (even though I kinda can't for another two weeks). Super grateful I have a heap of stuff in the fridge and freezer to last me a solid week.

5

Based on the number of enquiries about my outdoor furniture I think I underpriced it 🤣 It does mean it should be gone this afternoon, and I will have 1/3 of the estimated garden project cost covered, so that is a good result. Once it's gone I'll be able to make a start on pulling up some paving.

5

Felt actually hungry for the first time in a couple of days. Ordered Chinese food. I couldn't taste it except for the spicy soup, which I could almost taste, but which inexplicably had chunks of pineapple and raw tomato floating around in it. Not sure what kind of Chinese food that is lol. The steamed dim Sims looked like a couple of brains. The chicken satay skewers were done in a batter, which I haven't encountered before and hopefully won't again.

I've always worn my Minnie Mouse costume with pants but was planning to wear it with stockings and shorts tomorrow only to be told by my mum that it's too short. I would ordinarily just brush it off but it stuffs up my whole plan for tomorrow as I'm leaving from work to go to dinner and I was planning to change into a dress, but now I'd have to go to work in pants and a top, carry my costume to wear over top and carry a dress, stockings and shorts (to prevent chub rub) and my brain just can't compute that. Also not even sure what dress I'm wearing tomorrow night let alone what shoes/boots to wear that I can just wear all day and there's no dress code. So basically I'm on a spiral and instead of coming up with a solution I'm sitting on my bed paralysed by the indecision and uncertainty.
