XP really was the peak. It was so easy to wipe a machine and install XP and all the drivers and hardware just worked. I was a helpdesk tech during this era and once I had all the machines on XP I had a lot more free time to fight a battle of wits with the HP LaserJets.

Home edition, decent? Going to respectively disagree with you.

But yes, xp was peek OS.

Yes, it's definitely been a recurring theme with Microsoft.

I'm still of the opinion that 2000 was peak Windows. It didn't get in your way, had minimal added bullshit, but was significantly more stable than the 9x series due to being based on NT, and had wide hardware support at the time thanks to largely being able to use the same drivers as the subsequent XP. It's been all downhill one way or another ever since.

100%. 2000pro was first and last time I felt like OS just worked and didn't have to pay attention to it. This is what OS should be.

True, but at the time we only had one PC so we didn't really care about remote desktop, file shares and user groups etc. I was mostly busy playing GTA back then.
