Opening up TerraManic community as a place to talk about my games development

Hi! Im making a game under the working title 'TerraManic'.

What is TerraManic about?

TerraManic is inspired by games like Dwarf Fortress, TerraFirmaCraft, and Caves Of Qud. The current development focus is on incorporating real world geology into mapgen and primitive technology techniques into gameplay. The current roadmap goals are:

  • create a survival sandbox thats mechanically rich and more dynamic in the worlds presentation
  • enviroment interactions and block descriptions that educate on real world phenomenon
  • Add some light RPG mechanics that allow the player character and their equipment to level up in permanent ways
  • Have many dozens interesting structures and buildings
  • Create unique tools and weapons gained through exploration
  • expand the underground with various layers and microbiomes

Examples of geology?

  • Instead of just 'dirt' each biome gets a specific kind of topsoil like sandy loam, clay loam, peat, ect. This affects fertility, drainage, and sifting potential.

  • Instead of just stone theres now a variety distibution of metamorphic, sedimentary, igneous extrusive, and igneous intrusive rocks. Marble, shale, basalt, and gabbro are just a handful of whats in.

Interesting Mechanics already in the game

  • year + season cycle system
  • blocks/nodes updating over time (things like water freezing in winter and flowers blooming in spring)
  • Backpacks

What Engine Is TerraManic Made In?

TerraManic is made with the Luanti/MineTest engine and written in Lua. Its incredibly performant on all systems and easily portable to mobile.

Modability?

Very easy! The source code is written to be relatively easily readable and making mods for luanti games is a breeze compared to close sourced games. Theres a variety of mods that already work with the game on https://content.luanti.org/ and

Any plans for DRM?

No, The game will be released DRM free.

Is that AI Art?

Nope! All pixel art is 'hand drawn' by me in GIMP. The colors are usually sampled from a real image of the thing im trying to put into the game.
