I can recommend Endless Sky if you are OK with the top down view.
I've been thinking of starting a new game recently and just staying out of politics and the main plotline as much as the game will let me, at least until I want to unlock more ships. I enjoy it a lot, but the main plot has always felt a bit on-rails for how open ended the gameplay is.
Pioneer looks so good now. I checked it out a few years ago, but damn, that has changed.
