I was just listening to Slaughter of the Soul (album) for the first time a few weeks ago. Their influence on 2000s metalcore was apparent from within the first 30 seconds of pressing play. RIP.
2 contenders come to mind, but I'm sure there are others.
2010 - Dio, Peter Steele and slipknot's Paul Gray
2015 - more of a personal choice, most people won't care as much, I guess. Lemmy Kilmister, Christopher Lee (had some metal albums + narration for Rhapsody) plus the Colectiv club fire which took a promising young band plus a ton of good people and a friend of mine.
