Far right hate and repeated attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries including the UK. The man can spend orders of magnitude more money than the cost of an entire UK general election campaign and not even notice - that kind of influence is antithetical to a free democracy.

I've long thought twitter, by its nature, was corrosive to civil society, but unfortunately that won't be fixed by replacing it with another short-form rage-machine.

Fuck that defeatist bullshit. "Oh, what's the point of keeping billionaires out of social media?"

Well, there have been things that were not shit, precisely because there weren't billionaire assholes fucking it up. It does happen, it's not inevitable.

Though, it makes it more likely when you spread defeatist bullshit like this.

I think you might be misunderstanding the point.

It's the idea that social media, in its current incarnation, in and of itself, conceivably CAN'T be rid of these problems. It's an emergent property and it's entirely possible there is NO way to deal with manipulation or misinformation. Even federation doesn't eliminate the problem, and it's far past time to talk about the possibility that the only way to avoid the negative impact of social media is to not have social media - at least not in ANYTHING like its current form.

“Oh, what’s the point of keeping billionaires out of social media?”

I don't understand who or what attitude this is supposed to be paraphrasing.

Now if only Twitter were owned by a brown foreign extremist. Boom! Instant ban.

Alas, this is not how the world works 😔.

So, if the world was owned by brown people everything would be perfectly fine?

Besides being super racist, it's just not true.

Speaking both as a mod and someone who comments here quite a lot, every time someone here is hostile or unpleasant it boils down to a reading comprehension issue.

I'm loathed to use "every time", but I largely agree. I can't help but think that when a post starts with "so," - it contains a horribly skewed summarisation that contains cherry picked points, wrapped up in a neat soundbite.

I'll grant there's the occasional ban for spam but, honestly, comment-wise it's near enough 100%! If we could have a feature that said 'Are you absolutely sure you're replying to this comment and not one you've imagined?', it might help. But probably not.

No my friend. Please read my comment again and understand better this time.

I am making light of the fact that the UK readily proscribes as terrorists civil disobedience groups like Palestinian Action (admittedly some doing extremely stupid things) but says absolutely nothing about a vile neo Nazi like musk.

You reached the end
