The History Channel: Battle of Britain – World War II 1940, a flight simulator originally released in 2003, has just been re-released—on Steam as of yesterday.

Back then, this one got middling reviews. Perfectly serviceable, nothing groundbreaking, and certainly not a rival to the “serious” sims. GameSpy threw it in the mid-70s range. Yet it carved out a small cult following—partly because it wore the History Channel logo on its box, which gave it an “official” stamp of legitimacy that no other budget air-combat sim had.

What surprises me now is that this game came back intact. Most of the time, when a title is rescued from abandonware, the licensing is scrubbed and the name is nudged into something “inspired by.” Not here. Somehow MicroProse revived it with the actual History Channel branding still attached. That almost never happens.

The graphics are okay for 2003. Not state-of-the-art even then, and today they look smooth to the point of bland—like an N64 game running in hi-res mode. Cockpit view is the strongest part: readable dials, responsive controls, and it at least feels like you’re sitting in a Spitfire.

The audio has its own odd split. The launch menu greets you with bombastic, military-themed music that tries its best to sound epic. Once you’re in the air, though, things go nearly silent unless you open fire. Then the guns roar, and occasionally you’ll catch some clipped voice acting.

Controls are barebones. The Steam build doesn’t list controller support. Back in 2003 it was pitched at keyboard, mouse, and optional joystick setups, but don’t expect modern gamepad compatibility.

Platform-wise, it’s Windows-only. No one’s yet reported on Linux or Steam Deck performance through Proton.

Specs on the Steam page are unintentionally hilarious: it asks for a GTX 1070 minimum, which is overkill for a game that once ran on 2003 office PCs. Either that’s a boilerplate requirement, or someone at MicroProse didn’t bother testing.

And speaking of MicroProse: they’re the ones handling this re-release, even though they weren’t involved back in the day. Originally this was put out under Activision Value’s budget label. MicroProse has been on a bit of a “rescue old flight sims” kick, and this fits right in with their current catalog strategy.

No Steam reviews yet. Too new. But chatter elsewhere suggests there’s still an audience who remembers this fondly.

Would I buy it? Honestly, probably not. It screams “average.” But average with a certain historical novelty.

Introductory price is C$9.43—cheap enough if you’re curious, but not enough to make me reach for my wallet.
