Late 90s or early 2000s movie that is clearly ripping off a lot of other movies from the time

I made a vague reference to this movie elsewhere a day or two ago and have been annoyed with myself for not being about to identify it since then. I apologize in advance for the lack of detail. The things I remember:

  • The movie is about chosen ones trying to save the universe (I think), found and identified by a similar mentor. Yes, much like Mortal Kombat ... And others.
  • Early in the movie, there's a fight scene between the aforementioned mentor and primary antagonist; the fight takes place, I think, in a night club and the antagonist uses telekinesis to direct a spinning vertical CD as a weapon (this is my main memory of the movie).
  • The mentor counters the CD attack with his own telekinesis, which holds the "weapon" in place, but then the antagonist endangers bystanders, distracting the mentor, who has to release the CD to save them. He barely dodges the disk and I think gets a cut on his forehead.
  • The mentor collects the chosen ones and proves they're chosen by them all having the same birthmark. For some reason this happens on a boat. They all show their birthmarks, other than one who assures them that he has one but it's in a private place. Says something like "you don't want to see it, but trust me, it's there."
  • I think the final showdown takes place in a parking structure, but I might be misremembering.
  • This one is pure conjecture, but the movie reminds me of eXistenZ. That might be because of any kind of overlap or I might just have seen them in the same timeframe.

Thanks in advance!

That Wikipedia entry is for a movie from 2023. I couldn't find anything from 1998.

My findings match that of the other commenter - even your link references 2023. This sounds like it might be right, but do you have any other sources? Thank you in advance.

Hmm, no, this may match the OC's recommendation but there were definitely no robot suits in the movie I remember. Thank you for finding it though.

edit: I was extremely sleep deprived when I wrote this and so put OP instead of OC.

That was actually suggested in the original thread, but sadly doesn't quite match up. From the trailer, though, I definitely see why that came to mind.

Those are horror movies, right? The movie I'm describing may have had some imposing figures, but it was definitely more action than horror. Thanks!

Damn I remember a friend of mine describe this movie when it came out. Especially the cd part. I will ask him.

I asked him about it and he doesn't remember... I swear he was super enthousiastic about this film back when it came out, and we sort of made fun of him for a while, because of the way he described a guy killing people with a CD weapon. But unfortunately it's no longer his favorite film appearantly. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I didn't expect a response five months later.

That might be it! Thanks either way!

I saw this terrible film called "Jiu Jitsu" this week which reminded me of your question and I tried another search. :)

2

ChatGPT is insistent that you described Push starring Chris Evans. I can't actually find a scene involving a cd though.

2

Damn push was the one I was thinking of but couldn’t remember.

Yeah, the AI for any search engine I tried really latched onto either the telekinesis or the birthmark. Sadly, that mislead it in each case. Thank you for looking.

Its a mostly forgotten movie, the only things online that I can find is Battlefield Eartch (2000) but I thought it was called 'Battlefield at the end of time'

Unless I'm mixing up two movies...

It definitely was not Battlefield Earth. No well known actor featured, let alone John Travolta.

Do you have a link to this? Searching various combinations of those words is returning only Battlefield Earth or the Battlefield game.
