Do these “charity donations” from conservatives generally mean church donations? I don’t really count that as “charity” as its more akin to investing in your specific community
The article (posted in a comment) does not seem to reference religious donations. I do agree that is closer to investing in your local community than donating to a specific cause (though, it could also be both.)
It does talk about donating to local schools, which I think matches your point about how these donations are about investing in the local community. Conservatives in general seem to be more likely to donate to local causes as opposed to far-off cuases - the article calls this behavior "particularist.'
This is the data they used. Does the US have church-run public schools?
My understanding is that no, we are not supposed to have church-run public schools.
However, some states such as Oklahoma divert public funds to church-run charter schools… I believe this one is at the center of a Supreme Court case.
So, the real answer (as unfortunate as it is) is basically “yes” depending on the state in question.
@CoffeeAddict mostly matches urban / rural divide but some outliers like El Paso ate interesting.
One takeaway seems to be that republicans are pickier about what they will donate to then democrats, which is not that surprising to me.
The graph also points out how the northeastern states tend to give more to far-off cuases than the rest of the US.
