could it have been a scam? there's a scam where that happens and they do a ton of background research on your family and say "x is in custody and will be in jail unless you pay" and if you ask for proof they have information on like cars, houses, family tree, education, etc. depending on the scam center they can have like American accented people on the phone to sound more realistic
perhaps they got it wrong?

I got a call last week from a car dealership asking for Linda, again, and I said "I get calls for Linda all the time," and that my caller ID comes up as "Linda," and that now, when I call my dad he shouts "YO LINDA" as a greeting. And the dealership rep told me that Linda is a sweet old lady who is hoping to get a car soon. I asked the rep if she would say hi to Linda for me and she said for sure she would.
