So I guess we can boycott Penske now.

Happened in LA just days after a federal Judge struck down their use of warrantless arrests. And they continued at a Home Depot in Los Angeles a couple days after.

Did they say to Penske, "renting this for raids?" Not trying to be snide, but it's entirely possible that Penske had no clue what the rental was for.

Then they should denounce them. Loudly. Otherwise it's compliance and they're part of the problem.

I don't disagree with you one bit. Hopefully they do. Just trying to be realistic.

They did.

Edit to add: they didn't say "omg we don't approve of this for politics/ethics" they said "omg that's not safe and you're not allowed to use our trucks that was". I get that the first would be more satisfying to hear, but the second is a legalistic reason to refuse to rent to them again.

As a business, it's a good response. They denounce it without talking a side.

Personally, I would take more action, but I'm not a business.

9

imagine if picking a side in illegally kidnapping people off the street is seen as controversial lol

wtf is happening america

sh.itjust.works

They did. They said it was illegal in a statement.

Do you have a plan to undo the damage you did by jumping on this bandwagon?

16
sh.itjust.works

The damage is the point. Their brand was associated with this.

The damage. Is the point.

sh.itjust.works

The employee rented a truck to a random white guy. They do this every day.

The company stated the act was illegal after learning about it. What more could they do, or have done? If the answer is nothing, then the damage is undeserved.

Allemaniacreply

how about legally press the guy they rented the truck to if it was illegal? Unless I see arrests, penske did absolutely nothing but say "woopsie"

3
sh.itjust.works

What makes you think they know which of their many customers supplied the rented truck to ICE?

1

Not here to argue for or against, but the license plate is visible in the picture which gives a narrower starting point.

1

We can't hold police accountable for murder, what makes you think that a corporation can hold them accountable for this? On what legal grounds would Penske even build that case? It's not fraud. And Penske can't got after them for laws the police break while using the rental. So they ban that one guy that signed the rental agreement, so what? What exactly will that accomplish? The only effect would be to cost Penske money and make an enemy of a fascist police state that has made no secret of their eagerness to break the law and abandon due process.

1

It's a rental truck company. How the hell would they know? Some guy named Nathan rents a truck and says he'll have it back on Tuesday. They don't ask, "Will you be commiting treason with our vehicle today?"

Timothy McVeigh rented a Ryder truck. Does that make them Ryder terrorists?

Yes. This is literally adopted directly from Neo Nazi playbooks. Nazis like using box trucks to transport mass groups of people for two reasons: they're everywhere, and they're opaque.

Once you load up in this, nobody outside can tell how many of you there are, what you're carrying or kitted for, and they can't ID you from the outside. When you leave, it's pretty easy to blend away into traffic, or dump the truck out in some residential neighborhood and scatter away without anyone knowing how many people were in the truck to begin with. You also have no way of knowing what else they're carrying in the back - weapons? People? Explosives?

The other reason Nazis like using these is it now immediately sets you on edge if you see a moving truck anywhere near a demonstration, or parade, or whatever. The fear is the point - we might not be THAT truck, but we might be the next, or the one after that, etc.

9
sh.itjust.works

Nothing in your comment puts the blame on a rental truck company that respects the privacy of its customers.

16

I think what happened was they confused the word “they” to mean the ICE agents and not the Ryder truck company.

It makes more sense in the context 🤷‍♂️

4
lemmy.world

I think you misunderstood my question, so I edited it.

So if you see rental truck at a protest, a good idea would be to use a bike lock to lock it shut.

9
sh.itjust.works

Boycott a company for doing business with a random white guy?

I could go rent a truck right now. I'm not in a domestic terror group but the guy renting me the truck doesn't know that.

Penske has put out a statement calling this illegal.

Are you prepared to undo the damage you've done with this post, now that you know it was wrong?

48
Allemaniacreply
lemmy.world

penske made the statement because they got caught, not because they found out lol

-12

Hanlon's Razor, don't attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity (or in this case, just ignorance). There is no evidence to suggest that they are knowing or willing participants in this use of their vehicles, nor is there any way to verify that any random renter of their vehicles will not use their vehicle for illegal and/or terroristic purposes once in their possession. Short of black listing those renters when they get evidence it has happened and publically speaking out against it (which sounds like they have done), idk what else they could do about it.

14

What would you like them to do? Seriously. What, in your mind, was the "right" thing for them to do?

Please remember that "not rent to them in the first place" is not an acceptable answer as they are not mind readers and would have had no way of knowing what the plan for their trucks were.

Worth noting, Patriot Front had a huge leak of data in 2022 (400GB).

Patriot Front Fascist Leak Exposes Nationwide Racist Campaigns

You can download it at the following torrent address:

I'm seeding this on a permanent basis. I have a gigabit uplink. Please leach and share. Expose these nazi fucks.

I haven't torrented in like 20 years due to security and privacy concerns (I prefer usenet).

Recommendations for client and do I need to pipe it through a VPN (my VPN provider is double NAT'd though so I'm not sure that will work...)

1

It's not like any corporation is gonna come after you for sharing this material. These are home videos shot by nazis.

qBittorrent is pretty slick and yes VPN is preferred but it's not like this is going to have your isp banging at your door. You should be fine with double nat since the connection is more relying on the other person's ports being accessible.

lemmy.blahaj.zone

God those cringe little trashcan lids with ‘patriot front’ on it. I hate it.

32

Looks like some fascists who need to be ticketed for violating seat belt law. And then totally removed from society.

16

I'm just glad no one runs up to one of these Nazis fuck trucks and puts on an extra secure padlock while it's full of Nazis. Wouldn't want the Nazis to get stressed or overheated in metal box with no AC while they are clothed head to toe.

No no no no no

This is not wise and I urge you not to take the above advice.

You want the Abus 83CS/55, or, if you're made of money, the Assa Abloy Enforcer 342. Jesus, folks, you can drill through that cheap-ass padlock in like 30 seconds. At least get a better shackle guard and a protected keyway. Definitely something you can't open with a hammer

22
grysbokreply
lemmy.sdf.org

Is a protected keyway a feature that keeps someone from shoving sand or other crap down a keyhole?

4

No, it just makes it harder to drill out the key hole. Here's an example from American Padlock.

American does pretty decent padlocks, Abus and Assa do them better

3

I've seen ukranian drones fit through APC door hatches smaller than that

I'm sorry I thought I was staying up to date, but, who the fuck is the patriot front?

6

A white supremisist terrorist group that backs Trump. He is hiring people from white nationalist terrorist groups at ICE. This is comparable to what Hitler did with the SA and SS

So they are supposedly offical employee, but, still walk around with their toy shields. This timeline is too much. I want to go home now

1

idk how I didnt know that, maybe I was so overwhelmed that a bunch of nazies were trying to steal our country I missed that

2

This is unfortunately very standard through North America. The Montreal police, the SPVM, did the same during student protests in 2012.

5

they need to put something in the truck that disables or locks it up so it cant be driven remotely

4

I wonder if the Russians are funding the worthless shitbags. Shame a runaway dump truck did smack into them.

1
sh.itjust.works

You're aware that Penske had no knowledge of this in advance, and has since denounced the act as illegal?
