Go to the market and buy and store some additional items each time.

This is spot on - those prepackaged survival foods are usually way overpriced at like $2-3 per serving when you can build your own kit for half the cost with foods you'll actaully eat and rotate through.

This is good advise and I think will be my primary goal but I still wanted to have a contingency with some ultra long lasting, very little effort goods as well. Something I can put in the under stairs closet and essentially just forget about for a long time.
