Hey mate :)

Nope. I'm just getting set up now. And I've still got that game you've been playing to check out as well!

How are you doing?

2

Iโ€™m doing as well as can be. Got the footy on at the moment and might put on a the latest episode of The Rookie or watch a movie before bedtime.

Trying to stay warm as well!

I have made it to Ballarat. Looking at the traffic going into the city I am glad I wasn't travelling the other way.

I have hot air coming from my ceiling vents, and hot water comes out of the taps. The internet is internetting. Now I need to do a bit of cleaning and start making the place look more like a home.

Fuck. My neighbour died.

Fuck. He was around my age and leaves behind 3 kids and a wife. Fuck.

13

Recently had an elderly neighbour die, all his belongings turfed onto the street for collection including Narnia books and other long owned sentimental books/VHS. Had to collect it before it got rained on or collected to go to the op shop that was only 200m away.

6

Yep. Even in her grief she was so kind as to get one of the neighbours sheโ€™s closest to come and let us all know the news.

Mrs b is taking it pretty chill but itโ€™s kicked me in the fuckin teeth.

8

Yeah. I feel like shit. We didnโ€™t know him all that well but we know her very well and sheโ€™s always been super duper kind to the family.

8

I did the same re: super early bed and magnesium tablet.

I'm going to get some restavit tomorrow from the chemist to see if it knocks me out for a full 8 hours.

Has anyone else noticed Bonds stuff is shit these days?

I used to be able to rely on them for fairly good quality clothes but yeah. Stuff falls apart really quickly now.

8

Havenโ€™t bought Bonds in years because itโ€™s now overpriced and the last time I checked them out the cuts were really weird

6

and expensive

I may as well buy european clothes for the same price

5

Their baby stuff has been good but it doesn't surprise me it's all on a downwards trend

5

Itโ€™s awful. The fabric is tissue thin and the elastic in the underpants stretches out of shape within 6 months. I am completely happy paying a premium price for good quality basics, I just which I could find some! My money is available for any brands willing to make a decent product. I suspect thereโ€™s little incentive though, because dirt cheap material costs and frequent repurchase is probably more profitable than higher quality and lasts longer. The modern economy has deemed I must wear shit undies.

5

Complete shit. Mostly the underwear. And vastly overpriced for the 'quality'. Don't even bother with their socks/underpants - go to Kmart/Target for those. Kmart has good bamboo fibre socks, my last lot from there has lasted about 3 years on high rotation which is good for socks I reckon. Bonds still has reasonable trackie daks and hoodies.

5
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

As colour isnt as good as it used to be either. Step ones are complete crap too! I'm wearing uniqlo and wayver stuff a fair bit lately for a combination of cost and seems to last ok.

5
TinyBreakreply
aussie.zone

SAME! they are my main go to. But yeah quality just aint as good as it used to be. Mind you its still better than the cheap country road crap I brought at the same time, and better than bigw/kmart junk. But the Wayver have lasted better so far. Uniqlo airism still beats them all but I find fairly limited colours.

5
Pilkreply

I definitely noticed they have cheaped out with the manufacturing. Fewer pockets, sticky zippers and lighter fabric weights.

4
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

The chesty singlets are still the same, twice the price. The jocks on sale 5for$10 tend to last me ~4 years. I haven't tried anything else of theirs. The trunks went to shit ten years ago, elastic gave up after six months.

3

Today at the beach I found a Spaceman, I will call him Taylor. Also some barnacles and a whole lot of ibises.

7

I can't help but feel like a prick ugh my aunt has moved to Maffra and is hosting family tomorrow night/overnight to celebrate housewarming/April&May birthdays.

I have not been able to organise for anyone to check on mickey while we're gone. It isn't feasible to bring him (dad driving us, aunt already has a cat, there will be a big dog). I know he'll be okay, we have done once before one Xmas where I left the aircon on for him and heaps of food around - so I'm confident he'll be okay and fine. But there's that niggling fear that I'm a bad fkn owner. Idk just a vent - I'm happy if people wish to pass judgement aita style.

I'm lucky he isn't super food motivated, I can leave food around and he won't scoff it then vomit. I'll put the reverse cycle on warm for him and make a couple of nests out of the oodies, hoodies, and couch-blankets. I'll leave dry food out and around and make sure his water is changed tomorrow morning before I go. He'll be fine! Fuck!

7

Aw yeeeee The Guardian app now has the cryptic crosswords - used to be a seperate app until they pulled it. Love me cryptics! Takes a while to learn each setters esoteric use of cryptic clues, but once one does one feels very "s.m.r.t"

7
CEOofmyhouse56reply
aussie.zone

You have a special talent if you can work out cryptic clues. I do not possess such talent.

5
aussie.zone

A lot of it is less to do with general knowledge/definitions, and more wordplay.

Eg: in a clue, sometimes the phrase "caught in" or "buried in", even "inside", is used - it means the answer is in the clue itself. It could be an anagram of a word used in the clue, or the answer itself contained in another word. An example from the NYT:

Clue: Lover of birds imprisoned in Alcatraz
::: spoiler Answer Cat. "Cat" is the answer 'imprisoned' in Alcatraz, with "lover of birds" acting as a descriptor of the answer. :::

There's so many more techniques like that - approaching the cryptics like a wordplay game instead of a trivia game will help with completing them! The Guardian has beginner cryptics too, so it's easier to get into this genre of crossword!

4
Thornburywitchreply

Best clue in a cryptic I ever came across was 'Triumph for Mrs Mop" 8/7. I had _ _ e _ _ _ n _ / _ _ c _ _ r _ in the grid already. ::: spoiler answer

Sweeping victory :::

4
aussie.zone

That is a great clue! I'd be so proud of I made that haha it helps to know a lot of the answers are gonna be puns or punny in some way haha

2

Yeah, back when I was starting doing these, I was told that a cryptic clue ALWAYS had two parts - one indicating the meaning and the other the method. Part of the puzzle was working out which was which. And to be alert for puns: a flower does not necessarily have roots in the ground - it could be water running downhill and so on.

4

My cryptic skills max out at The Age. I can't do Guardian cryptics - though, once upon a time I insisted I couldn't do cryptics at all and then got addicted to the easier ones so I guess there's something to be said about giving it a go!

4

I found a book on a chuck out table that explained cryptics really well. Didn't help me with half the puzzles in the book because wtf do I know about American tv presenters of the 90s, but the 'this word means it's an anagram' stuff was great

5

Shucks, well I thought today's meeting with my supervisor was gonna be a bust because I spent all morning in a funk and didn't prepare much, but it was much less rushed than yesterday and we covered some really good ground! The model I was struggling with yesterday turned out to be good enough. Plus I got some very positive feedback on the logic flow and reassurance that it was all heading in the right direction (enough for a really minor thesis, anyway) even though I know there's flaws with the data.

::: spoiler Door track cleanliness has been aquired :::

Vacuuming and washing the outside of the windows has also been done. I'm just about to start on mopping and then I can spend some time assembling things (and bringing more stuff in from the van).

I have decided whoever installed the sliding doors here put them in the wrong way. The traffic flow through both the laundry and the living room would work better if they opened in the other direction, and the space for the washing machine (with both the power point and drainage point in the sink) would block the doorway if you actually put the machine there. Fortunately it's a big area and there is still space for the machine, but I am going to have to run the power cord across to the other side of the sink and hook the drainage pipe over the side of the sink instead of using the built in drainage hole.

6

Sometimes people just don't think about living in a space. I took our front screen door off when the movers were here because it opens the direction that blocks the stairs ๐Ÿคฏ

3
Catfishreply
aussie.zone

Er, please explain? Like tape the hems and sew through it?

2
Thornburywitchreply
aussie.zone

Pretty much. Basically put a strip of masking tape along the cut edges, stitch to the seam allowance then rip off the tape from each side of the seam line. Holds the fabric flat and the feed dogs grip very well on it. Then it unzips beautifully. Use painters tape or masking tape as they leave no residue. Tape can be marked with biro for matching pieces together before seaming. Doesn't work too well for rolled hems though. But for doing sheer curtains or other flat seaming it's a game changer.
