This actually checks out. In DND, when you "conjure an animal," you actually summon a fey spirit that takes the form of that animal. And, we all know the fey are mischievous.

Basically only walking and attacking. I guess the npc pinned it down with a dialogue while the party went elsewhere without noticing its absence
