How did you become a better converser?

I wouldn't say that I am a bad converser. But I have had a hard time talking about topics that I am less interested in. I don't always have a good reason not to be with these people so it's something that is going to have to stay, but when I am less interested I just feel like I don't have anything good to say or anything funny to comment about

Focus less on the topics and more on what your conversation partner likes to talk about. That way, they'll be more ready to embark on a topic.

I once tried asking someone "when was the last time you cried in public?". The conversation turned to an unexpected direction (in a good way). I got to learn more about that person. Bonus if they get to ask you the same question, which gives you the chance to spontaneously start a topic of your own.
