Battery? Why would a train need a battery? Just electrify the tracks?

Yeah, many rail sections in Europe are not electrified. Battery-electric is definitely better than diesel.

"has died a quick death" seems like a bit of stretch. The article itself lists other countries which are testing and trying to adopt the hydrogen trains as well.
