Anyone who hasn't watched Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator really should. In the movie they mock how Mussolini was simping for Hitler and wanted to impress him by trying to one-up him at every occasion.

This is totally what Trump is trying to do with Putin right now. Trump is a Putin simp desperate to get his attention.

Yes.

Literally Hitler.

'My New Order', a collection of Hitler's speeches up through 1939.

Trump kept it in his bedside table in the 80s and 90s, according to his then wife.

Did people not know about this or forget this?

Trump literally routinely read Hitler's speeches before he went to bed for years, then got very defensive when asked about it.

Lefties who were politically active during Trump's 2015 campaign were... fairly concerned about this, and basically everyone to the right of them just screamed 'You're just calling him a fascist because everything you don't like is fascist' at us.

Did this whole thing seriously get memory holed this hard that you genuinely didn't know this?

Or are you just younger and/or weren't so politically involved a decade ago?

17

thanks i didnt know this. i kinda got the cibes that this was the case, but had never heard of that until now. not something they taught us in school. im not necessarily "younger" but i was very disconnected for a long time between no phone, couch surfing punk houses, hobo life, then just living in rural New Mexico until like 7 years ago.

I know you’re being facetious and asking this from their side, but from our non-Nazi side I highly recommend “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” by Shirer which is a great telling of how Hitler rise to power and a study of him and his crew. I’m sure Trump types read these histories to learn and try to pick up where Hitler failed.

14
chaogomureply

My reading of history is that Hitler failed because he was Hitler.

He was a powerful orator, and also a narcissistic man baby, high on his own self importance long before he was high on meth/cocaine/heroin/etc.

He was too paranoid to trust anyone more competent than he was, and he was fucking incompetent.

I could go on, but in short, Hitler was a conman who tapped into that special hatred that some people have in place of their hearts.

15

Pretty much the exact same except that Hitler was a hardened war veteran, and Trump has been a conman all his life. Most of Trump's cons were stupid and failed, but never quite hard enough for him to ever see consequences.

Hitler also went to prison for his coup attempt. It was a daycare style prison, but he still went.

Other than that, the similarities are striking. Likely because the only book that Trump in known to have read, is a copy of all of Hitler's speeches.

3

i mean. i guess. it's titled "my daddy never hugged me and kept me away from my mom, whom he may or may not have effectively purchased on account of how incredibly impoverished she was"

6

Yeah there's a bunch of history books. My mom had a collection of history books on the second world war with accounts of what happened and the atrocities committed.

You just have to take notes in a notebook and call it Project 2025.

Other unnamed officials told the paper that a big military parade will require a huge amount of coordination between the six branches of the armed forces, along with several federal agencies and regional officials.

If it happens it'll be a shit show...

To quote Henry Zebrowski:

I have a bad idea, and I'm gonna execute it poorly

66

IIRC our asphalt roads are not built to handle tank tracks and you know little king shits in pants will insist he has tanks going vroom vroom for his big boy parade.

6

That’s an interesting strategy question. Would it be more effective to not show up, knowing there will be swarms of magats anyway, or to create a huge protest? At what point does lack of an audience trump a protesting audience, and what will they claim for attendance?

When there is video footage of the parade, someone needs to make a video clip that is compiled from several clips from the US, North Korean and Russian military parades and put "Entry of The Gladiators" as the background music.

The USA is extremely lucky that Trump is 79 years old. Imagine if he were 40. By the time he turned 79, they would be living in a totalitarian dictatorship. The luck is that they will suffer for another 6-7 years. Yes, Trump will have a third term, in three years there will be no free media or independent judiciary. The public administration will be turned into mindless voters. All critics will suffer the fate of the oppositionists in Russia and will become "allergic to windows". Forget about democracy. Land of the bigots and the home of the bully.

23
lemmy.world

He can (and has) done plenty of permanent damage. I don’t think age is doing us as many favors as you think. He can put us in the exact same position in 4 years a younger dictator would.

The only difference is whether or not the US can recover some actual semblance of the democracy it once was. The world is already turning away from us and I sincerely doubt we’ll be welcomed back should trump no longer be president. They forgave us his first term, but the second term with him openly threatening other countries is a line that cannot be uncrossed. With us being held at arm’s length it will be all but impossible to recover our position in the world as well as mend our democracy.

30
lemm.ee

The reputation that America lost is gone for good. It will take a colossal effort and time, and these people who caused the problems are not going anywhere. They will continue to cause problems and oppose any solution no matter what.

15

And In the end it's not really on him alone, there are far too many of us who WANT to be isolated and aggressive because they've been brainwashed into thinking were untouchable, despite the fact that "America's become weak thanks to all the gays and feelings" and "kids these days never worked a real job". The double think is insanity

6

My hope is, if we can win and put the maga cult out of its misery, we can change this country significantly so nothing like this happens again. Then, and only then, can we begin to rebuild some trust.

2
lemm.ee

Trump has been called a super ager by some people. That means despite a highly unhealthy lifestyle he has managed to remain active and functional despite all else.

Don't think he could just drop dead tomorrow. While I am sure millions of people would like it if he died suddenly of a heart attack or stroke, that probably isn't going to happen. Kissenger lived to be 100 despite not being much of a healthy looking guy for decades, and his slurring speech patterns were widely mocked as early as the 90s. I am not sure if anyone who wrote his Freakazoid appearance in the 90s ever thought he would live as long as he did.

What I am ultimately saying is that he might make it to 90 and still keep going.

Please, this isn't the kind of information I wanted today. I eat one mcdouble and feel cardiac arrest behind me and this guy can eat them on the daily

5
lemm.ee

I am very sorry about that, and it fucking sucks. Although one thing I find funny (in a bitter manner) is how Alex Jones once said that the elites of the world don't eat the same food as we do on a fundamental level. He was invoking a Stalinesque form of paranoia (Stalin really did have special farms for him personally that were staffed entirely by NKVD members), but what Trump is doing should have fundamentally laid that to rest. He is a garbage eater but still survives. Inactive, and with a foul temper that would have raised anyone's blood pressure levels to dangerous levels but he still just lives.

Military personnel sell their morals to the highest bidder. They listen to the orders of their higher ups and hide behind the narrative that: "I'm just following orders" / "I don't make the rules".

2
Estiarreply
sh.itjust.works

As much crap is is going on in the world right now, the US military still has some scruples. They don't just blindly follow Trump's orders. And especially wouldn't just fire into their countrymen. Trump hasn't managed to take over every institution yet. Especially the military.

Service members know how to complain and think for themselves. And if something doesn't seem right, they will clarify the heck out of it and push back. It's not the Russian military

4
kcwellerreply
feddit.nl

Yet they will gladly shoot up farmers and whole villages in the middle east because their institution and higher ups say so as they continue to blindly believe the "we bring democracy" narrative.

If you are military in the information age, you are willfully ignorant.

4

That doesn't really have much to do with domestic stuff. I mean, every military does fucked up stuff, but at the end of the day, they're made of people and have their families. Even myself.

As a service member, I educated myself on tactics, philosophy, diplomacy, economics, culture, mental health, geography, and many other topics to understand how and why military force is used. I know it's not for democracy à la Helldivers. It's used to keep the trade going and to conduct politics through harder power.

You might be an isolationist and that's fine. But don't insult the intelligence of myself who dealt with all sorts of philosophical dilemma and educated herself and others around her

There is a standing army. Where do the costs come from? Like flyovers, it will be an exercise.

-4

Last time they refused to release the cost breakdown, but quoted 93 million (but that one sounded smaller).

So other than expenses faced by any parade, I don't know details. Transporting the vehicles, road prep and repair (city cost seemed like a big part of it), they might all get paid for anything not routine.

Either way, captain bonespurs can run a parade up his own ass
