I think it's fine if we don't get back to what we have like in r/malaysia, my experience from there is we can only see like a hundred of user commenting and then the 290k user is all lurker and never interact. Our highest post upvote is only around 4500, so around 98.5% of them couldn't even bother to upvote a post, let alone comment or make an og post. The sub might be big but if you post/comment a lot or interact in the daily thread, the sub is actually pretty small and rather tight-knitted

I think there's a lot of good for having a space where people are sharing relevant and interesting news. Even if they're lurkers, it doesn't mean they're not part of the community I guess?

Thanks for asking guise! It's cheap, Lemmy is written to be very resource efficient! Domain is USD10/y, hosting is about USD20/month.
And hosting is actually overprovisioned and could probably be USD5-10/month. I got a slightly bigger VM just in case (2 CPUs, 2GB RAM). But I'm seeing CPU % at 2.5% with just one spike to 10% in the last day. RAM holding steady at 52%.
Zero issues covering costs for this experimental stage btw! We don't know how this will go yet. And things have been good career wise lately. But yeah if we start seeing real traffic and need to pay for big boy servers, we may need to figure out something with the community!
In the future can consider Liberapay to crowdfund from monyets here for big boi servers because the platform accepts MYR (no need to convert currency and deal with FTF) and you can contribute as low as RM 0.05 per week. It also does not take any service fees because its run by donations too.
I commented on the post in Reddit but I'll comment here as well. Is there any way I can help with running the Lemmy instance? I am not an experienced dev yet(I suck at ops and support) but I would love to contribute in any way I can :)

In general, Chinese product listings are quite dodgy looking and extremely posed. Sometimes I'd want to see how a certain driveshaft is set up for the kitchen mixer paddle, but the product shots don't show the kemaluan inside the mixing bowl.
The review photos and text however, are extremely informative. While there is still a certain confirmation bias (seeing the good you want to see in your investment/purchase), it is still a very good resource.

Eg, if i want a pressure cooker and I don't know the name, do I need to use google translate, and copy the chinese word for "pressure cooker" into the search bar? Surprisngly no. You can type in English and it still shows the results that DO NOT have english names/listings. Seems the search function is built with a translation tool. Nifty.

@Annoyed_Crabby how did you do your search? One way that's mostly foolproof is locate the full URL and copy then paste on the search bar of the instance you're logged into. Basically you shouldn't need to have another login
Forgot to add, sometimes the full URL search is better if you suspect no one from the instance has subscribed yet (so the community isn't fully fetched even though technically in the federation) but once someone subscribes that instance should have it
