I finally made the jump from reddit to Lemmy. While it was slightly confusing for my technologically dyslexic ass I'm happy to be here.

Welcome to the party. This post runs daily and although without any real rules we try not to be a dick to each other.

Welcome! There is definitely a bit to learn about how everything works, but I think it's worth the effort.

Hi frenchys 👋 please be sure to stop by chef Bacon's food truck whenever it rolls around, typically once a day whenever chef feels like it. Food quality is good but the variety is where it's at - free too

Cushion 1 is complete. I'm very pleased with the pattern matching.

Five more cushions to go.

Trigger warning: ASD, ADHD

So a couple of weeks ago I had a phone chat with my oldest sister, someone I've always admired and think is pretty awesome. When I was a kid she was my idol, so artistic and clever, rebellious and political. She told me about her recent autism and ADHD diagnosis (I was pretty surprised). She knows our father's side of the family better than I do, and pointed out a pretty strong case for ASDs running on dad's side of the family. We ended up talking for over 4 hours. Some of the things she said seemed oddly familiar, in a way that played on my mind up until last night, when I did an online Autism Spectrum Quotient self assessment and landed right in the mid zone for Asperger's. Some of the questions were almost creepy in a "how did they know?" kind of way. I told the kids and Elder asked if they (the kids) had ever been assessed. I had to admit no, they hadn't, because nobody has ever suggested it. If your kids are well behaved and do the right things when required without meltdowns and ostentatious or eccentric behaviour then they generally won't suggest it. Now I'm thinking about it for Elder, because from what I've been reading he and I have a lot of parallels with it. My sister welcomed her diagnosis and said it felt like, for most of her life, she'd been operating a complex piece of equipment without a manual and then was finally given one. If he doesn't have an ASD, fine; but if he does then this knowledge may help him in his further development and understanding of himself, and assist his school with modes of delivery for his education. I figure if it's a good idea (given the revelations about my family) then better sooner rather than later to be of most use to him. Otherwise I'm feeling a bit weird about the whole thing, like you're feeling like there's going to be a knock at the door and then there is.

12

It is super common for women and girls to not receive a diagnosis and be left to struggle. And it is genetic.

Might be good to know if it’s the case so he doesn’t blame himself for being different

10

Mine was when my kid was diagnosed as a teenager so I did a heap of research, including on how it presents differently in girls. It was like, ohhhh, that explains a lot!

3

I had put much of my social stuff down to having attended a very weird primary school and never having learned early enough because of the restriction. Still could be a factor, but ASD makes broader sense.

4

The calico waits for me every day. I was late last night and she was still there waiting.

Soooooo easy to pick up and place in my pocket lol

11

I had a dream I was working as a mechanic in a factory and I lived upstairs. I could make music 24/7 without any issues.

It was a nice life.

I miss the camaraderie of the labouring work I used to do. These office people can be such complete and utter twats.

Fuck Hospo though. Never again.

11

I enjoyed physical work in my 20's. If I did it now, I'd spend the whole weekend recovering my broken body.

It was fun though.

6

I had a dream that I was watching Spirit leaving the bay, but like a pinball, bouncing off these giant ships and rolling around. Very strange.

6

I had a dream where 2 friends were gonna do the deed but I crashed the party and we all sat there awkwardly playing uno whilst she stared daggers at me. What was weird about it (as if that WASNT weird in the first place) was they are 2 friends I dont walk to any more. Hope they are both doing well.

Woke up to the dishwasher stuck on 37mins to finish. I didn't put it on and it was on a mode I never put it on, and it was empty.. and there's no one else in the house..

Spooky.

One night I was just dozing off and I heard the washing machine fill up. I shit me self. Turns out it was a broken timer on the machine. My guess is it's a similar deal for you.

8

I often find that my ebike has switched itself on overnight. Something I have to check each morning just in case.

6

I occasionally wake up to the tv mysteriously turning on by itself at night.

That's spooky.

6

They underpaid me $1k. We have this thing where you can access upto $1k of your pay early.

I didn't use it. And I don't have an account with the details indicated.

Fucks sake.

Sorry for my negativity today

All deductions and details should show up on your pay slip.

Does it show number of hours you’ve been paid for on your payslip?

In any case something on your payslip should show the difference from last payslip.

Don’t let them get away with it!

3

Hopefully you hear from them soon.

If there’s a payroll department I think it’s be worth getting in touch with them as well.

Vet day for Miss Meow. She has been drugged and so will hopefully be less traumatised by the experience than last time.

10

We managed to get through the appointment with her being unhappy but not completely terrified. I saw that the vet has a big red flag on her file with "warning: nervous patient".

She received a clean bill of health, except for her weight. She at least hasn't gained anything since the last visit, but she also hasn't lost anything.

4

Just had my fourth root canal and a really aggressive antibiotic filling to hopefully make up for my compromised immune system.

Fingers crossed that it works because the next stop is evicting the tooth.

My little dog has hurt himself. I let him out for a piss this morning and he came in limping. It doesn't help that he leaps off the porch like a superhero. He seems to be getting better but I'm still keeping an eye on him.

He's all fixed now. He perked up when the others came home and then he begged for his dinner.

Might be time to make some ramps. I've been feeling the same about my wee fella.

4
aussie.zone

Honestly he wouldn't use them. There's one step there but he chooses not to use it unless he's coming inside.

3
aussie.zone

It took my Toby a little while to use his ramp when he was getting older, but once he learnt that going the ramp didn't hurt like jumping, he got a lot better. Plus teaching via yummo treats.

Hope your dog isn't too ouchies!

3
aussie.zone

Could be his knee or maybe arthritis? My sympathies, Melbcat is arthritic and I won’t let her jump anymore

He had Danishes (berry and apricot), donuts (chocolate, custard and jam), croissants (plain and almond), apple turnovers and an amazing spinach and cheese pie. I nabbed a berry Danish and an apple turnover to take home for the boyo.

Very out of the blue, totally here for it!

8

I'd been contemplating the custard donut, but as soon as he opened the box with the berry danish I was SOLD.

Oh man we're getting a live action Lilo and Stitch AND Moana? Jesus Disney, leave some stuff animated.

9

working from home because my nose is doing that thing where it becomes more blocked as I talk

9

Poor sleep blegh.

Good news is I've completed the majority of my assessments, more than I thought I had ha. There's just some last bits to do regarding proper enclosures per certain laws/acts which is easy enough.

9
aussie.zone

Had a 30 minute power nap and missed a meeting. No one asked and no one cared.

9
aussie.zone

I've completed all my measurements and planning for my couch cushions, now it's time to start cutting fabric. 🤞 wish me luck!

8

Don't cut after 9, don't sew after 10, and it's not finished until you bleed on it.

(Ignore for shift work as applicable)

5

I generally err on the side of measuring about 14 times, and still manage to mess things up!

The good news is I have lots of fabric, so it won't be a total disaster if I cut something wrong.

4
aussie.zone

If it has a pattern make sure all the pieces are going the same way before you cut. Good luck🤞

3
aussie.zone

Not just a pattern, but a directional floral design incorporating striped panels, so it also needs to be evenly spaced and the pieces need to match up.

5

Terrifying. I’m an amateur still so what I tend to do is trace the pattern pieces onto baking paper and cut that out rather than cut the original.

It’s a pain in the butt to tape pieces together and might not be feasible for quite large ones but one thing I thought of was - before removing the translucent copied pattern from the fabric you cut, you could roughly trace the design and stripes from that fabric piece and then line it up with the design on the next bit of fabric to make sure they match up?

It might not work if pieces have to be flipped or cut on the fold but that’s a way I might try to cheat through the intimidating task

1

TIL you get a small bag of corn chips like Doritos or whatever, smoosh it up a bit, open it and put your taco meat in and the rest. It’s called a “walking taco”

I’m sure it’s tasty but I don’t like the idea of eating hot meat out of a chip bag.

8

I've seen an IG reel about a food truck that "specialises" in it - you show up with whatever chips you want, pick out the taco meat and topping that you want and they put it straight into the bag. Can't say I have any interest, but also won't yuck someone else's yum!

5
dumblederpreply
aussie.zone

I make a taco salad with chilli and corn chips in it, but it's in a bowl.

2

It is, just all the taco stuff but in a salad bowl - lettuce, tomato, onion, salsa, sour cream, grated cheese, chilli, corn chips, jalapenos maybe avocado when the market is up. Heavy on the salads to get that daily veg up.

Using uTube on the TV as a stereo is proving to be infested with Clive Palmer bullshit currently. Need to get off my arse and replace the dead unit. Argh, more decisions.

7
aussie.zone

It's absolute brain rot. I can only handle it by running smart tube next as a YouTube replacement

5
aussie.zone

omg, I just found a mouse hole behind the bookcase, they chewed a hole through the wall!!

7

Do the fuck heads who like to pretend they're police at the self serve checkouts realise they're complete knobs I wonder.

7
aussie.zone

Power trips. I've had a Woolies' worker demand to check my bags and receipt (all goods bought at Aldi). I just said no and walked out.

Absolutely zero consequences.

If they want to search you, tell them to ring the police or get out your way.

1

I'm sure the minimum-wage-slave who was just doing what their boss ordered them to do (as their boss watches on to make sure they're being "assertive" enough) really cares that you said no... they'll totally lose sleep over it, that'll teach 'em for following orders.

7
aussie.zone

If they have a reason to delay me, that's fine. Otherwise, I paid for my goods and I'm leaving. It's not about them losing sleep, it's about the principle.

1
mysticgregreply

And I’m sure if someone turned up at your workplace and gave you attitude for just doing your job you’d just love it.

As someone in a role where I often have to be the punching bag and just cop it over decisions that are 100000% outside of my control, I have ZERO tolerance for people who treat front line workers like they’re the enemy. By all means I agree that it’s crap and customers shouldn’t be treated like criminals, I’m with you there, but take it up with their management don’t make the workers day any worse than it already no doubt is.

5
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

I agree with all your points but...they literally just said "no"

2

aussie.zone

“Power trips”, “get out of my way”, maybe I’ve just been punched too many times today but the attitude here seems crystal clear to me.

4

Sorry but retail workers do not have search powers. That's what I meant by get out of my way. My transaction is completed, I'm done.

Not interested in a middle aged workers trying to act like police.

I make no apologies for walking out.

I've worked retail before. It's not easy, but no need to be over aggressive/zealous towards customers.

I prefer not to interact with workers anyway, which is why I use self checkout.

Technically they can citizens arrest you, but it's such a massive legal can of worms that they're told not to. Even during security guard training they basically told us it's not worth whatever hassle comes of it. Plus if you feel you're innocent, you can defend yourself against the crime of kidnapping using reasonable and proportionate force.

7
aussie.zone

Our local shopping centre does employ some gung-ho looking security guards, but all they do is call the cops. Not like I'm trying to cause trouble, I just want to pay and leave without getting questioned.

3

Basically unless they've seen you steal something and haven't lost sight of you since it happened, they have very little legal right to detain you.

3

And that's WITH the rebate. Without the rebate, it'd be a $150 hike. For a fucking childless couple with no claims apart from dental and some glasses. Fucking madness.

yup, zero jump scares and nice people ☺️ No jokes that were insults, just gentle humour. No murders.

tho there was a little expose of the corruption of the archaeology field by big business but Lance took the moral stand.

2

Bloody oath, it feels like a Friday night, stupid Thursday night footy.

6

So you know how in films to portray a character holding back their emotions, the character will clench their fist so hard it bleeds?

I never understood that. I have always bit my nails, often leaving a good amount of skin between the nail end and the top of my fingers.

Well, I've grown my nails out and yeah, I get it now. I just yawned and stretched and clenched my fists, and it hurt!

6

Yikes indeed.

Sending you a pm as well about something when you have time to check it.

3

Farrrk. I wish American brain rot would stop being imported over here. There’s enough of it already

2

I should make that. I've got the curry packs in the cupboard. I tend to get stuck in meal prep ruts.

5
aussie.zone

I haven't been eating much tinned fish recently for some reason. I'm sure the tides will turn again though and I'll be eating them daily. Gotta get through my current stock first though

3

I haven’t been eating much either, in fact the last batch I bought are still unopened.

I might stock up on some more little tuna tempters on my next grocery shop, nice to make and sandwiches or quick pasta meals.

2

anyone know of refillable workshop rolls? not the tubs, the rolls to stuff in the tubs. I keep finding antibacterial which isn't what I want, and holy shit when did google start ignoring the site:.au marker

Fark. Never expected that tonight. Thought it was going to be a one sided demolition.

3 quarter time and scores are level! Game’s on!

3

boo, Minh phat didn't have lodeh paste, guess I'll have to schlep it to Laguna on Glenferrie to see if they have some... Indulged in a 5 pack of indomie and a couple of heat and eat vegan protein things (chicken rendang and asam fish). will have one of the latter with rice and stir fried kangkung and call it a night. My Indonesian adventures of sayur lodeh and tempeh will have to wait till the weekend.

E: oooh I could also try this Chinese braise recipe using winter melon. I have such a huge one, some was going to go into the lodeh, now I have an idea for the rest.

E2: ok dammit what I've got is bottle gourd, not winter melon. Some really good sabzi recipes out there though, might do one with dessicated coconut and urad+chana dal
