Got a new floppy eared best mate on the weekend. Astro

29
aussie.zone

Astro! Adorable.

I'm giving about 1/2 a week on those thongs, 1 week on the washing basket. 2 on the rug.

7

He does love the thongs already lmao. Diverting his attention to the 5000 fluffy toys my partner has purchased is the main goal at the moment

5
aussie.zone

There’s a kind of toy called a “herding ball” that might be good for him.

It’s a weighted ball - you fill it with water or sand - that’s too big for him to get his mouth around it, so if he wants to take it anywhere he has to push it along and guide it so it comes with him. Basically he’d be proxy-herding it instead of you everywhere he goes. It might help give him an outlet and a job to do, so he’s productive instead of destructive.

5
aussie.zone

Maybe herding tennis balls will help. My old kelpie/heeler cross loved his bicycle tyre on a rope tied to a tree branch. Hours of chewable and swingable fun.

4

Yeah I had a kelpie a while ago, makes golf practice in the backyard easy. He would bring the ball back for hours at a time

So we're all here because of a change in circumstances that none of us expected. I'm in my early 50s and a creature of habit, I don't cope well with change. I used to enjoy Twitter, but it's gone to shit, every third tweet is an irrelevant ad for something I've never expressed any interest in (crypto etc.). It's pretty much unusable now. I used to subscribe to The Age, hard copy, home delivered. But then Nine took it over and it started to go down hill, to the point where it's now the Herald Sun but for people who can read big words and long sentences. Pre-CoVid my favourite local bar was open five days a week, from at 5pm. I was usually the first in the door, and Fridays and Saturdays we'd be a big group handing a fair amount of money over the bar. Post-CoVid restrictions, the owners changed it to Fri/Sat only, late opening, and more of a club vibe to attract the younger crowd, so that killed it for me. I could go on, but this is turning into a bit of a rant, so I'll just finish by saying that because of the way my brain is wired, I need routine and predictability, and I'm really over shit changing around me in every aspect of my life and having no say in it. How do you guys cope with change?

26
aussie.zone

I don't mind change. It helps me to learn things I wouldn't normally seek. What I don't like is that our community that I learnt so much from was basically deleted forcing people to splinter off. The more people, the wider range of topics, better the conversations. :(

I am grateful for this little corner :)

14
aussie.zone

I'm grateful for this space too, really impressed how quickly we've adopted a new home.

I think I just want a stable and predictable (read: boring!) life these days, after decades of upheaval and forced changes that I wasn't ready or prepared for.

4
bull⚡reply
aussie.zone

I'll let others reply with more serious answers but your post just gave me a thought which you may or may not enjoy:

People usually say "change is as good as a holiday" but as someone who doesn't like change, you could say "change is as good as a holiday to Adelaide"

13

i'm a millennial used to social media platforms changing every few years. I guess I've just given up on the concept of anything online being permanent.

12

A lot of us are feeling this way with the loss of Reddit, I hadn't realised that I used it daily for the last decade.

I think it isn't as bad when you have something new and exciting to look forward to, like maybe you find another bar that ends up being better than the old one.

I was disappointed when Fairfax got bought and was hoping the newspapers wouldn't be part of the deal.

11

I feel this. I'm starting to wonder if it's the pace of change rather than change itself (if that makes sense).

9
aussie.zone

I think humans naturally adapt - and that includes you. What did you do before Twitter, for example? And hell, you're here, instead of the DT on Reddit. It's similar, but there's still change involved.

What I think is important is recognising that maybe the "change" takes a little longer to adopt, or adapt to when you're older (and I say this as a late 30s individual who's starting to notice things like this). But that's okay, as long as we do evolve and change in some capacity. Otherwise we'd still be stuck in caves smashing rocks together to make fire.

9

Funnily enough 1 million years on from the first Homo erectus making fire.. I can't do shit without a lighter or matches.

6
lemmy.world

I was hoping for a shittymorph-esq transition of this comment into Grandpa Simpson's rant about wearing an onion on his belt.

5

I've never actually had 'regular' habits so accepting change is kind of easy.

Always had different groups of friends and interests growing up.

Even with work, I tend to change jobs every 3-4 years.

The only constant in my life for the past 20 years has been my wife and, more recently, kids.

Swapping a platform to talk shit with people ain't no thing 😁

3

I miss the Age in its heyday too. There was proper in depth journalism, especially liked the weekend editions. There’s nothing the same anymore. It’s all easily digestible snippets or click bait. But anyway, reddit DT is back now and I’ll be using it because I like the interface better. I find it clunky and a bit too start-up here.

2
aussie.zone

Oh my gosh yay I found you all. I have been so sad without the DT I missed everyone :-( Where else to post my anecdotes such as the following:

Woolies massively messed up my order today. Received half of some other family’s order. I have all their dairy, including a bunch of kids stuff. They presumably are the ones with my week’s worth of dinner meats, among other things. I am now the owner of 6L of milk, 3 tubs of spreadable butter, a ton of kids yoghurt pouches, and much more. I am going to have to see if any of the mums at play group want any of it.

Woolies had been suspiciously good with my orders there for a while, absolutely zero issues the past several orders. I feel like I’m being punished for finally trusting them lol! Waiting to hear about a refund…

23
aussie.zone

Egh... this is the one reason why I don't do home delivery of stuff. I feel like the stuff I actually need will never arrive, and so I'll just be stuck with chocolate (well now... I guess things can't be all that bad).

Also, yay for finding us! It's now quite the same and there's still a handful of regulars still wandering out in the wilderness somewhere, but for what it is, it's still a nice place to come and chill :)

4

Pretty much what it’s like! I’ve been relying on it since we had baby and only my partner can drive at the moment. But once I get my licence I am hopefully saying FU to the supermarkets altogether and shopping elsewhere as much as possible.

4

Great that you’ve found your way over here! I was so pleased that the dt had reassembled itself over here - was feeling quite bereft thinking I had lost everyone after the reddit closure thing

4

Yes I was honestly quite upset! Checking the DT is part of my lil neurodivergent routine so realising it didn’t come back after the few days freaked me out.

2

Welcome back to the party. There's a list of who'se been reached out to. I think I saw it in yesterdays thread.

4

I know we can't give awards so I'm just going to announce my unrequited love and respect for bacon for giving me a heads up for melbourne coming back online. Now I can recover my journal into a document and i'll just keep posting on this zone. Still, I like this DT now. So here I am, declaring my unrequited love and respect for my saviour, Bacon!!!!!

20

Now that we have direct and open competition we'll see where the DT goes. I for one am not going back.

Getting there slowly, but stronger and geez more femme every day. The boost to my oestrgen levels last week and quitting booze have had marked effects on my mood. I'm teary but it's cos I feel so in love with life at the moment. I planned to arrive at this moment and did.

I have so much to look forward to today and I'm grateful for everyone here for being here and sharing mine and your thoughts. So many kind and funny people in one place, this is the Melbourne we all know and love. The bits where we are not being tailgated down punt road or made to feel like pawns in a property investment scheme. People wonder why we love this place so much, it's because of the people not the cool shops and so called liveability.

Happy pride, both rainbow and city!!

16

The drive in to work was pretty miserable, as was the walk to and from the car. I do believe that it is good to have a bit of unpleasantness to help us appreciate when we are warm and dry better. Or maybe that's just my sour-grapes-style envy of people with garages connected to their houses.

8

I'm working from home as I picked up a cold late last week and don't want to spread it throughout the office (like some people seem intent on doing). But I feel guilty being home in the comfort of my home when some of my coworkers would have had to trudge in through this weather.

4

Yeah I'm glad I can potter and answer some emails. Finally cable up my speakers and fx pedals and put away all my laundry.

3

I was a longtime DT lurker and I'm stoked to have found this place. I'd barely been on reddit since the blackout began and just randomly checked it tonight to see if anythings going on, and saw the link to here on the reddit DT. I know it's technically back or whatever but I'm pretty sure the app I use is shutting down at the end of the month anyway, and the official one is garbage so here I am. Maybe it's meant to be. Unlikely to change lurker status beyond this though but we'll see🫠

15

Just like that, week long tum tum woes went away.

Cannot begin to describe that fortunate timing.

15
aussie.zone

Well that was a miserably wet walk this morning. Mr Woof kept mostly dry with his raincoat on, but is still a bit wet around the ears so I'm getting the whole wet dog smell experience.

The good news is that Thursday is the turning point for the days gettting longer again (although I believe getting warmer lags behind that). I am looking forward to seeing a bit more sun. I know a lot of people have strong preferences for summer or winter, but I am definitely in camp autumn & spring, the extremes I could do without.

13

Same. There’s not much decent weather for those who hate cold and heat (can’t tolerate well)

1

My mums partner is addicted to his PlayStation. He doesn't cook, clean, or help with anything when he's not at work because he just spends all his time smoking, drinking, and playing PlayStation. Over the weekend, it shit itself. It doesn't turn on. So he found an old Xbox 360 that my mum had in storage, and that worked for 24 hours before shitting itself too. Now he's walking around the house, banging cupboards and being a cunt because he can't play his videogames. Any minute now he's gonna spin some story to blame me. Giant man baby

13

Today has been shit, and likely to get worse this afternoon. BUT, the sparkly shoes I spent an obscene amount of money on have arrived, so there's a silver lining.

13
aussie.zone

This whole thing is just… it’s fucked man. And I don’t understand the hate the mods are getting on this one. They are not the bad guys here. And hey if you were getting pushed on bullshit at work and your work were treating you like crap you’d push back too. Especially if you weren’t even getting paid.

I'm going to make this dish tonight. I have some luv a duck Peking duck so I'm going to slice it and fry it. Take it out to rest. Fry some onions and add garlic, ginger, gochujang, kecap manis and the left over sauce from the packet to make a new sauce. Pair it with rice, steamed broccoli and top with an egg. I think it will taste good. Hopefully. Also kimchi on the side.

12

Feels like a bit of an Everything's coming up Millhouse Baku moment. I had my first drive today. Only 20 minutes, but I didn't crash. I've also come to the conclusion that I should temper my expectations a bit, because I was way overconfident 😂😂

12

it's never too early to begin doing donuts in a car park, L plates add to the aura tbh

6
aussie.zone

That’s great that you feel confident! You’re right to be wary of being overconfident because you don’t want to start taking risks and have it backfire badly. My biggest piece of advice is to drive like everyone else on the road hasn’t slept for two days and is really distracted. Use your indicators early, drive predictably, leave a good braking distance between you and cars in front, watch out for panic-merging at the last minute, and stick to a safe speed (that might not necessarily be the speed limit if it is, say, raining/foggy/roadworks etc).

6

Thanks for the advice! It was just around a fairly quiet car park today, and I'm still trying to get the hang of the controls. Though, I will bear your advice in mind for when I do hop out on to the roads!

1

Rainy days are going to be hard on new drivers, the first time it rained after I got my license I lost control of my car and went thru a sign.

4
aussie.zone

The more work dump on me the longer I take cause I’m stressed out and overwhelmed. Not really sure where this leads tbh.

12
aussie.zone

Gah, I feel this. I mean, there's only so much one person can do in any given workday, but yeah, the mental toll it can take on top of the actual job itself isn't ideal. Not by a longshot.

3

Nup. They hired for role x. I applied, they said you might not be ready for x, how’s x-1 sound? I said sure. They proceed to not hire an x and all of x’s responsibilities fall to me with none of the pay. Fuckers.

4
aussie.zone

Gotta love it when they move the goal posts like that. Had an interesting conversation with a mate on the weekend about this very thing - the constant internal struggle between not giving a fuck versus admitting that you do to some degree, but then having it affect you because of how much work you actually have to do. Or the quality of the work. Or the output. And it's all implied, yeah? Like, you might not have a boss who outwardly says "you need to do X by Y" but you know deep down that if X isn't done by Y then you're liable to get called into the office for a stern talking to.

And what is it all for in the end? You're just going to get lumped with even more work to do if you do a great job.

2

Definitely! I HATE the idea of getting a bad score in the performance review, but I can’t understand why I’m killing myself for this job either.

4

So, continuing on from my good updates on Saturday, my absolute favourite worker I've ever met left a few months ago. He took a job as a counsellor at a different org. There's been a few months of clearing it with various people and making sure there'd be no potential conflicts, and nobody could invent a way to twist a good thing into something terrible, but last week it was all approved and given the tick. I'm allowed to go counsel with him, and we have our first session tomorrow!

11
aussie.zone

Decided I'd attend the hour long technology information session (Teams meeting) from my bed. I have a tablet mount on it so I can watch ma' stories. "Oh it can handle scanning straight to OneDrive that's pretty cool", I thought as the sales rep was describing some of the features of the platform. Next thing I knew it was 40 minutes later, 3:05pm and the Teams meeting was silent with only me in there.

I didn't have my camera or mic on, thankfully. Oops.

11

That's a nicer search than the one linked on the aussie.zone main page. Although I find myself looking at most of the sites and thinking I really don't want a bunch of communities trying to be just like Reddit. I want something better!

I want to actually be able to have some ongoing conversations, to learn new things and not just repeat the same superficial things that tend to float to the top in the Reddit subs. I think there is a tendency for everyone to want to join in the biggest groups because that seems to be where more things happen, but smaller groups with people that are actually active and involved are much more rewarding.

6

Now they have a coin slot to put any coins they find down the back of the seat 😝

10

Just heard from my son, who is currently living in Florida and working at NASA. Apparently the r/melboune posts are causing some cultural confusion over there. Particularly the myki one, and the ones about helicopters overhead. There is no Carrot Man in Melbourne FLA, so that had to be explained. The sunset pix though are appreciated. NASA is watching r/melbourne with bated breath - something to do with dangerous aliens interfering with the American Way of Life apparently.

9

Took advantage of the break in the weather to dash out and get my antihistamines.
In other news, the cats have now decided they want cat food, of which I had plenty since I stocked up just before they went off it. At least I can eat the chicken.

So the DT is back but now I don't know if can go back out of protest because screw the mods who shut it down so quickly.

Todays weather will be a 100% chance of rain, with temps between 7c and 11c ~BOM

9

Picked up the game Dorfromantik - it's kind of like tetris, if tetris was hexagonal blocks of varying types of terrain that could be linked for a higher score. You have a limit number of blocks in your stack that you take one off the top each turn, seeing what's next and what's coming up in the stack. Some blocks have "missions" like "connect x amount of houses" or "make a forest of 88 or more trees". By completing these missions you gain more on your stack.

The brilliant thing in my 1 hour of play last night was that I started unlocking some cool things - some blocks have rivers or trainlines, but I then unlocked a little boat and a little train, and surely enough if you connect a one of those with a line/river then the vehicle will trundle along its path while you play.

Super chill game - it's not like tetris in that way. I finished one game without even knowing my stack was empty, score flashing up on the screen with a "play again" button present. Yes, I thick I will play again :)

9

The YouTuber Many A True Nerd plays this frequently when he wants a chill day. It looks so relaxing

Watching a "What Happened?" video before work, it's about like what happened for x thing to stuff up royally. It's mostly about video games or consoles (I think he's done like video game movies and such?).

This one is about the GameCube, with a quote from the former Vice President of Marketing at Nintendo who says that the GameCube's colour "didn't feel masculine, I think. I remember us being very nervous at E3 that we were going to get bad press purely based on the color." Like Nintendo Japan liked the purple/indigo colour scheme but Nintendo of America hated it. With the former VP saying that they should do silvers and blacks, but "it wasn't that you couldn't bring out hardware that was a different color. It was just a very... 'female' looking color."

And man... I'm so glad that we as a society are straying from colours being feminine/masculine. I mean it still happens of course, but slowly, the younger generation is weeding that out. Thank goodness. Because purple is my favourite colour.

7
bull⚡reply
aussie.zone

As a fellow purple lover, I'm sad that car manufacturers have stopped making purple cars. My purple car gets compliments frequently. When I eventually buy a new car, I'll likely get it wrapped in the same purple even though it'll cost a few grand. I also rock purple caps, shirts and my supermarket nanna bag is purple.

Bring on more purple everything.

9
aussie.zone

Yep I'm very much a purple person. Anything and everything I'll get in purple (with pink coming in second). It's weird that they don't colour cars anymore, it's hard trying to find like my parents car because they're black and look the same. When my mum had a red pt cruiser it was easy to spot it.

1

With modern technology I don't know why we don't have patterns. Even just ombre or something. Instead cars are becoming more and more boring every year.

3

I tend to like a nice deep red myself, but a rich dark purple is probably second favourite. Really it is less about the colour and more the same tone that I like. The idea that any colours should be reserved for specific genders is absurd. Society really needs to get over this bizarre gender tribalism we have, if society needs to dictate what you can do/be/like those differences obviously are not "natural".

7
aussie.zone

I wonder what the reaction would have been had the purple been more on the vibrant/stronger side rather than the kind of matte/lilac colour. I'm thinking like Shinji's Eva01 in Evangelion (although even that could still be argued as being a bit on the feminine side). In the same vein, I wonder why purple and not red - the same red as their own logo.

But yeah, I'm with you - we still have a ways to go, but it's nice to see and hear things because called out, even for something that was only what, 15 years ago?

5

It kind of fell into that poor slot that seems to happen with Nintendo consoles whereby every second one kind of fails, for no real reason. The Wii U was a great idea (and hell, you could argue Sony's recent move to have a portable PS5 device for home use is the same concept), as was the Gamecube, yet their predecessors overshadow them in so many ways.

2

It's so silly but whenever I'm watching a nature doco and Australia gets no mention I get a little sad.

Turns out that mashed potato with brown sugar basically just tastes like brown sugar. It's actually pretty good, which makes sense as it's a neutral flavoured carbohydrate with a sweetener.

I tried it last night with a little bit of the mash I was making for dinner - took a small bit out and added caster sugar & molasses (because I don't actually have brown sugar, but that's functionally the same thing). It was a bit over sweet, but I think a better ratio of potato to sugar would improve it.

7

Does it actually make any difference in this case?

I don't see how it would, given that the sugar dissolved into the potato without any issue.

Mr Woof was causing a ruckus in the kitchen, so I went to investigate. He was trying to get at my sweet potato! I've had to move it to a higher shelf for safety.

7

I had no idea I’d given out 200+ Community Awards on Rdt. Not sure how I feel about that now.

So for some reason the main person at my job agency said that the period I did the trial run for would be unpaid, and it seems like the ombudsman says unpaid Labor is fine within certain areas. But when I asked my job provider if I was getting paid, for the trial run that I would be and that it's illegal for him not to.

I'm a bit confused, and annoyed that it might be unpaid.

Edit: so okay it looks like I will be paid. It's just up to the boss man and I. Iunno, it's very confusing. Because I'm his first like in-house non contract/freelance person. It's a little different.

6

I'm honestly not too sure. Like yeah my boss said that he got sent a message saying that it was unpaid but I got told the trial would be paid for.

not that i know of! unless it's volunteer work or a very clearly set out demonstration of skills (ie.. make 5 coffees to show us how you do it not do a 3 hour service shift to show us how you do it). weird for a job agency to say that

2
aussie.zone

Yeah like I was tasked to do things but I was learning over the course of a week or so. I might talk to the job provider person about tomorrow because I have an appointment with her.

1

that sounds like.. what normally happens when you start a new paid job. definitely worth a raised eyebrow at the least!

2

Bloody corporate training videos, using a big red gift box to symbolise a bribe to a politician.

Don't they know it's always an Aldi Bag filled with cash.

6

So r/Melbourne is back but the mods are having a temper tantrum so they've made it so you can only talk about Melbourne, Florida, USA? Those mods are fucking stupid

Take two of ordering Buldak carbonara noodles on ubereats. Wish me luck.

5

Good luck. I gave up on Uber Eats about 18 months ago after way too many bad experiences. Hopefully you have one of the stress-free experiences with the yummy food you wish for.

5

For breakfast? Oh they are opacket noodles? It appears they are the ones i bought recently from coles haha

It's a good show, what episode are you up to? We're watching Ugly Betty again, so good

3

Ugly Betty hits the wholesome and hilarious in equal measure. Amanda and Marc are pure evil fun!

2

Oh, so the subs back open? What's everyone planning on doing? Will we be staying here? Or are we migrating back? :/

My evening walk was eventful this evening. Mr Woof and I got to play Good Samaritan! A woman cleaning a house down the road was having trouble getting the owners key locked back in the key safe. Happily I have a very similar one so knew how it worked and was able to help, although their safe was a bit beaten up and it took quite a few attempts (and a broken nail) to get it closed. Then Mr Woof got scared when she picked up her broom and barked at her, but he was a very polite gentleman otherwise.

The universe did reward us - the delay meant I was walking back past the food cupbard just after it had been stocked so could stop instead of making a cold dark trip back later. I got a sweet potato (which I haven't had for a while), a few salad ingredients and some grapes.

R/Melbourne is back!?

I’m really confused. Is that post by the mods saying the Melb subreddit can only be used for things regarding Melbourne, Florida (USA) intended to be sarcastic?

5

Yeah I'm hoping folks stick around here with the DT. I know it's back on r/melbourne, but I like you folks, I don't want to deal with Reddits bullshit atm.

Yeah a lot of subs are going contrarian to continue the protest. Only fans became no fans (pc heating solutions with no fans) and some big porn sub became a Christian Minecraft server. reddit seem to want to double down so I’ve no issue with them sticking it to the man!

Just a heads up it’s still very much porn and I was not expecting that at 6:30pm at night haha

4

That makes more sense then. I just didn’t have the context and don’t get sarcasm a lot of the time.

3
aussie.zone

oh wow, they have voted to only have posts about Melbourne (Florida)! They were ordered by Reddit to reopen or be replaced, looks like the r/pic example is being followed.

4
aussie.zone

It says they asked the community tho…but the subreddit had been locked and there’s no poll. Unless it was on discord.

Uggghhhhh my ASD brain hates this. Why can’t they just be clear about what’s happening. Might just stay here.

9

Definitely staying here unless you all pack up and move back.

Yeah I want to get on board with the “stick it to the man” vibe but the loss of the DT with no warning after I merrily logged off/deleted the app thinking I’d be back and “seeing” everyone in a few days was genuinely distressing. Mildly distressing but I was still upset to lose a place I had been going to multiple times daily for a year with zero warning. I have been so confused with the lack of clarity and the confusing post they’ve just put up that is very ironically lacking in accessibility/clarity.

5

Yeah, I feel this. The DT is a great social connection & was pretty anxious about it just disappearing. 🖤

3

Its been poorly handled i agree. I support their protest on principle but ppl are messy in their execution

all the links, the sidebar and the automod content is about Australia.

3
aussie.zone

Yeah, my impression is that the mods hand/s has been forced, and they’re just being childish about it.

5
lemmy.one

It’s malicious compliance as a form of protest. Many other subs are doing it as well.

I really don’t think they took an actual vote amongst those who subscribe.

9

I dunno. I dislike what reddit are doing, but it does have a working app….

5

So much rubbish and stress today trying to organise the techy parts part of this trip for tm.. passowrds, apps, visas..

I want to be...

ok, I just saw someone was banned from a community with the reason "wants to see what it is like to be banned". That one made me laugh.

9

It's a bit strange that is is not at all filtered by community or instance, it's just a mess of everywhere. Probably best not to look too often, with all the toxic comments. I do find the bizarre rants people come out with fascinating, but also disturbing.

Just got a copy of the RCA Receiving Tube Manual.

If I was the technical writer, I would try and get a "fucking" in the title. The RCA RTFM.

Does anyone know where I can get a car key replacement and reprogram? I have a Honda and they quoted me $550, and it wouldn't have even been a key it was just gonna be a fob. But like I need a new key and have it programmed for preferably less than that

4

General Keycutters you find in shopping centres used to provide that service, I'm not sure if that's something they can still do.

3

My new movie for today was The Pale Blue Eye. It would have been a better than good telemovie if it weren't for Gillian Anderson trying to be a character actor, she sucked so bad and it tainted everything. But everyone else, real good. Story was good too. Out of a possible 5 hobbits it gets 3

I'm not sure whether to message someone from a dating app first after initiating chats the other two times.
